47FET has always been a meh for me. OK, but not great. For kick, yeah, it certainly does "that thing", but IMO, there are lots of other mics that do it well too - UM70 comes to mind. I'd love to try the Heiserman 19 there. I've had many opportunities to buy vintage 47FET's at what would be considered crazy good prices for vintage mics. I've always passed, as I don't feel like it's a mic that I "need". Eventually though I did buy one of Chad's FET clones a couple years ago. I like it, but I haven't had a lot of opportunity to use it much. Bottom line : nice mic to have if you have the money and opportunity, but certainly not a "must have". At least for me.

I watched some documentary about Metallica making of the black album, seems it was used for lead vocals for many of the songs: Check out around 18 min 30 seconds, for example. I also like some demos from Alec Brits using it: In any case, if I found one in good shape locally for a decent price I’d happily add it to the arsenal. I used to watch those Metallica vids non stop when I was 14-16 yrs old. I learned so much from them, and rewatching now it’s all still relevant, thanks for sharing this outake stuff.. Seeing Jason using 2 amps and DI, one amp for highs, thats how you get options to mix bass. I could go on and on about those videos. Just wanted to say if you are going to use FOK just for sub and lows, and always lowpass.. then Studio Projects C1 is great. Kick, bass, whatever you want sub

Yeah, that's the thing.... cool mic but I've never felt it does something so well where it's worth $3-4K. Even on kick out, I find I like the Soyuz 023 or a R-121 just as much. They don't do the same exact thing, but sound just as good in their own way, and I personally find the 023 to be more useful as a general purpose cardioid workhorse. FWIW, the best-sounding 47 FET I've found is the Lawson model. Once I got that, it replaced the Soundelux ifet7 I'd been using for years, which handily beat all the Neumann 47s I'd tried. 🤷🏻♀️ Pretty sure the Lawson is under $1500. I've actually used one quite a bit! It's pretty cool... I personally just have never LOVED that style of mic enough on anything beyond kick where I could even justify spending $1500 on one. As always, YMMV.

The problem with the 47FET is the value equation vs Gefell’s and U87, its real value is always skewed by someone who thinks it’s a 47 on a budget. For $5K I could have 2 umt70’s and a UM92 gee guess which way I would go.

Yes, the prices for the Neumann are ridiculous. I meant even for a good clone, like the Lawson, I couldn't personally justify that sort of investment.

I would certainly agree $4k is waaaaay too much for a 47FET. It's a $1500 mic, all day long. smashlord - I got my Lawson for much less than $1500; I actually wanted their tube 251, and found the 47 in a set that was being sold for an exceptionally low price, so I sprang for both. Haven't regretted it! It was a great score.

Rock on! Everything has a value at the right price!
Maybe I'll have to try the Lawson out on a few more things other than kick next time I have it available...

Not a bad sound on my buddy Wyatt.
