JMO and interested in other opinions. It's been a long time since I used one and I'm second guessing myself(as per norm). I never really liked it and always thought it was a mic for a nondescript out of sight out of mind nothing special kick sound, not much body not much punch. My understanding is back in the AM radio days Neumann was pushing the FET47 as a U47 replacement, a whole bunch of studio's bought them expecting great things and ended up using them on kick as an edge track last choice because they never were very good on anything else, then along comes the internet and 🪄💥"expensive legend"? Am i missing something?

Guess I’m returning my AC/DC records now! IMHO as Neumann Marketing itself touts as well suited for Screamers and Crooners. Always worth a try. Chris

When I've got a yeller, and the sm7 is too lacking in detail, the fet 47 does the trick. Also, on the opposite end of the spectrum, it's not bad at all on upright bass. But yeah, it's often on a kick about a foot back to catch the bloom.

Great on Lou Rawls “You’ll Never Find”. FWIW easily comparable to Vintage 87 on me. So am a bit biased! Chris

Great on kick out, but needs some EQ.
Can be great on the right voice (but the same goes for any mic)
I like them on guitar cabs, myself. Also nice on bass cabs.

Surprising as I’m ambidextrous.

The Neumann 47 FET is the perfect vocal mic for Davina Michelle who has become quite popular after Pink heard her cover (below). There are a few YouTube songs with her on a 49, it was no contest, the 47 FET is the better fit for her, and she quickly switched back to the 47 FET.

I think when I had daily access to one, I only liked it on kick, maybe bass cab, and guitar cab. Even on bass cab, it's gotta nice tone, but doesn't really pick up the attack super well. I'd always have to mix it with an SM7 or something.

I have one on loan right now, and I have been using it on BD out and I totally get that "oh, yeah, this is a thing I understand" with it. Great on kick out, but needs some EQ. Can be great on the right voice (but the same goes for any mic) I like them on guitar cabs, myself. Also nice on bass cabs. I might have a day or two of Bass reamping coming up. Maybe I'll try the FET there.

I seem to remember a photo in the Tracy Bonham The Burdon Of Being Upright has a candid looking shot of her singing into one. I talked to Sean Slade at TapeOpCon and I can't recall, but I feel like he confirmed that they in fact did use a FET 47 on her vocal.

I watched some documentary about Metallica making of the black album, seems it was used for lead vocals for many of the songs:
Check out around 18 min 30 seconds, for example.
I also like some demos from Alec Brits using it:
In any case, if I found one in good shape locally for a decent price I’d happily add it to the arsenal.

I’ve only used clones, but I prefer them on bass and guitar cabs over kick. I’ve had luck on vocals too.
I like a good transformerless LDC for FOK. All the subs, none of the honk.

I’m a big fan. I like it anywhere you might use a dynamic but wish you had a condenser. It’s great on guitar amps, bass amps, Rhodes, brass, woodwinds, whatever. I love it on acoustic guitar nylon and steel and of course it’s great on upright bass.

Much of my early engineering career was spent making records with him. I’d be happy to ask him what they used on Tracy’s vocal. I’ll report back 🫡

I love them on bass amps. Mine is glued to bass duties cause it always captures everything needed. On outside kick, many mics will do that job. Currently for me I love the Heiserman Type 19 on outside kick - it's fast. It always beats the 47Fet
Actually, the more I think back about it, the 47Fet on outside kick has been amazing on drummers who don't play too loud, it captures the sound of the front skin nicely. When the kick is played hard - it does not cope so well. My guess is transformer overload.

It’s just another glove that fits some hands and when it does - great.
I like them on upright bass or bass guitar cab, and can work on a kick drum though I usually always go for a dynamic on kick.
For my own vocals - no.

He actually sent me that pic you mention here, with the note "I have no idea where that was taken…" They actually used a 1950s tube 47 on her vocals. It's a mic I know well; it lived for a number of years at my studio while Sean and I were working a lot together.

I only had that one chance to hang with Sean, and we talked about that record and the Uncle Tupelo records they did. What a great guy.

In any case, if I found one in good shape locally for a decent price I’d happily add it to the arsenal. Yeah, that's the thing.... cool mic but I've never felt it does something so well where it's worth $3-4K. Even on kick out, I find I like the Soyuz 023 or a R-121 just as much. They don't do the same exact thing, but sound just as good in their own way, and I personally find the 023 to be more useful as a general purpose cardioid workhorse.

FWIW, the best-sounding 47 FET I've found is the Lawson model. Once I got that, it replaced the Soundelux ifet7 I'd been using for years, which handily beat all the Neumann 47s I'd tried. 🤷🏻♀️ Pretty sure the Lawson is under $1500.
