That’s also pretty much what the ATC scm20’s do! Yeah but that very low distortion makes it seam like they go lower, but I wouldn’t be able to live with 20’s and no subs so go figure.

you have the non-SL ATCs. They’re great speakers but a bit smoothed out as you describe. The SCM11/12 are bang for buck. The SL ATCs like the SCM 20 and 50 are exactly the opposite but the tweeter isn’t very “physical” and neither is the bass on the 20s. Better Dynaudio tweeters are a bit more physical and brighter. The Morel ones Quested used are darker than the ATC non-SL. Focal Alu-Mag have the metal dome IMD but are damped and dull. The Beryllium is lighter and faster than reality and you can really hear it with cymbals and guitar fizz. The current KRKs are in between. The current Genelec coax assembly is heavily limited. It doesn’t really sound bad, just has little headroom to prevent it from physically breaking. If you really want a sudden crack, horn loaded compression drivers will give it to you and provide the best translation to PAs but at the cost of reduced detail and tonal response. The JBL 7 series are great for this as are better Tannoys but the detail isn’t there. The only Tannoys with a lot of air are the ones from 15-20 years ago with the super tweeter. Good speakers. RIP. I check everything on HD 26 now, the cleaner successor to the classic HD 25 dj and broadcast can. It’s less wooly, less bass heavy, and more forward with reduced treble spike. Man I’d love a pair of the 20’s but they’re freaking crazy expensive. almost 7000 a pair and you still need a sub!

Thanks for everyone's input....Like I said, I'm gonna gives these a shot. It's not like the ATC's are bad. They're actually pretty great, but there are things they leave me wanting sometimes. If these are completely meh when I get them, I'll eat the shipping and send them back. If they're a diamond in the rough, then I'll be really happy I found something unique and fun to work on.

There is one thing I would check first, make sure they are not using a 1st order high pass in front of the tweeter. While the first order 6dB per octave filter is as perfect as filters get unfortunately it offers very little protection of the tweeter. Over the years I have heard a bunch of awesome sounding designs with. First order filters but the first mic crash, feedback or even extremely plosive vocalist will kill the tweeter.

2k for the pair listed. He’s giving me a better deal. Honestly if Tony had a CNC & the time I would draw something up about 40 liters for the Volt/ Morel Combo & Have Madisound design build the Crossover. Hell we could do something really fun with the Volt 2 & the new Radial 10 ! Just built this walnut desk for some monied humans in Rancho Sante fe ca, no CNC just TCL(tony c labor), i will never do this again, the dove tail style straight joints were a total bear, might look cool on some monitors though?🤔

The image caption is hilarious.
"Designed to outperform NS-10 Monitors."
As if the NS-10s were some final bastion of fidelity.
And at $4k, they better.

Hey these finally came today! They’re really excellent. High end is extremely clear and extended, midrange is very detailed and open, and even though they are light on bass, there is enough info to work without a sub. I always felt like the SCM12’s were a little hifi sounding. Very smooth, but everything felt too gelled together to really pick apart what was going on in the mix. Time will tell how these are once I start working on them, but my initial listening tests were really fun.

When I get some down time, I’ll do proper measuring.

If your mixes translate okay then they’re working for you.
If what you hear is what is there - and the presentation isn’t fatiguing, you’re onto a winner.

Is it an optical illusion or do these have an angled front to a square back like some of the NHT (?) did?

Nice work, hopefully you are pleased with them sonically. 100% I have no desire to put back up the ATC. I’m getting way more clarity and separation with these, and they are much easier to drive. Last night I was just listening to some reference tracks at low volume and all of the info was still there. I have some tracking to do today and a mix to hit next week. I’m excited to get working on them. If anyone is looking for something different and you’re into the ns10/Amphion sort of thing, you should give these a serious consideration. Talk to Nick at blackoceanaudio.com

Behringer A800. Works even better on these because they’re easier to drive.
