I am looking to replace my current monitor, which is a 27" ultra-wide of some sort. Its wide enough, but the resolution doesn't give me a lot of height so I am interested in getting a 4K, probably 32".
What do you find works best, largely for mixing - two smaller monitors, one large one, or just whatever. I figured I'd ask folks who do this day-in day-out in case there is something I'm not considering.
As always, appreciate the input.

I use the LG DualUp which is just perfect for mixing. For one, vertical screen real estate is more important than horizontal. And for another it's easier to get it out of the way of your monitors. I think this thing wasn't popular because it's kind of weird, but it's perfect for this if you ask me. www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-28mq780-b-dualup-monitor

That looks good. Lots of daws adding “side panes” now though to utilize the wasted horizontal space. So maybe less critical than in the past. Might have to get one though…

I’ve been using a wall mounted TV.. 32” 4K. It started out of necessity as a temp solution. After using it a bit it has become normal. The thing I like is I’m never adjusting where the screen is. It’s not in front of my speakers, so that’s nice. I can watch something like a movie or video and feel like I’m at home, that’s probably my favorite thing. That and using the remote to turn off the screen, and feel like I’m all analog for a bit. The only downsides is not really bad, it scales 1080p for 4k so it’s not MacBook crisp, it’s a little blurry. Even a 4K monitor isn’t, as not a lot of 4K Daw development for DAW, at least for Reaper last I checked. I bought a 4k Samsung monitor and theme (metric) which looks amazing, but not as functional as stock theme, so I rarely ever use it. And windows scaling is a bit strange, I could never get win10/11 to match my 2012 MacBook quality. I gave the monitor to my son for his PS5. Still it’s a fun theme if you have hiDPI screen… jrengmusic.com/metric/

Not what you want to hear but entirely room/ setup / personal taste dependent. Your sticking this giant baffle between or behind your monitors, even a small one will have an effect.

Wil just say I downsized from a 27” imac to a 24” budget monitor and I miss both the crispness of the imac and the additional screen real estate. I think once you get used to a certain size I wouldn’t go smaller
Cheers, Geoff

Biggerr, farther away and lower spl the better imo, a smallish monitor between your speakers ain’t no good at all as 1st reflections are comb filtering instant

I don't know if it's still a thing, but for a while Pro Tools was really having trouble with 4K displays (it could not scale properly and would do weird stuff). I'm using two 24" curved (Samsung) monitors) but could probably be happy with a single 34" wide. One reason I'm using a couple 1080p displays is that when you go 4K everything gets really tiny... So for now, edit window in on the left display and mix is on the right. Sometimes wouldn't mind a 3rd monitor for the interface's "console" (currently the Orion 32+ control panel) but I get by just switching to it when needed - nowhere to put a 3rd monitor anyway.

My ATC 25’s are set up in a just under 5ft equilateral triangle to my listening position.
The largest screen that has zero impact on the sound (I’ve ABX tested this fact) is 24” set 3 feet in front of me - distance my glasses correct for.
So for me anything bigger than 24” is too big.
Which suits me as I hate screens, music is a listening art not a looking art, my screen spends 50% of more blanked out.
I have a screen blank shortcut on my keyboard which I now instinctively hit after I’ve finished making any changes and then I’m listening without looking at Cubase!

We have a 48" curved ASUS ROG screen between our Dynaudio Lyds.

Your sticking this giant baffle between or behind your monitors, even a small one will have an effect. I've always been curious why more people don't alter this. I've got my monitor somewhat off to the side and below my right monitor. I can very early see it and am not forced to stare at the waveforms/ bouncing meters. When I'm looking forward I feel a bit closer to when I mix analog: just music, little visual distraction not to mention the lack of audio reflection.

What do you find works best, largely for mixing - two smaller monitors, one large one, or just whatever. I figured I'd ask folks who do this day-in day-out in case there is something I'm not considering. As always, appreciate the input. So here's the deal. I went through this some time ago and it's not as simple as it seems. Lets say you have a 32" screen and it's HD (1920x1080px) so that means there is 69 pixels per in (PPI) for a pixel pitch of 0.015". A 32" 4K (3840x2160) would have 138PPI and a pixel pitch of 0.008", which is very roughly double the pixels and half the pitch. Going up to 4K on the same size screen at the same distance you have now would half the apparent size of everything on your screen using the native resolution. Ask yourself, do you really want to have everything on your screen half the size? Now ask yourself, at what distance do you want to use it? Moving the screen further away, you'd need to increase the size considerably to get the same viewing angle. Going from 2ft viewing at 1080 would be roughly equivalent to 4K at 6ft away. So you need to balance the viewing angle and the pixel pitch so that you don't push the monitor so far away that you lose the usable angle but you also don't want the pitch to be so small that you need the monitor to be too close to easily see all the screen. For me, I found that 2K (2560x1440) was perfect at 32" for what I needed. I kept it about 2ft away and increased the size and pitch slightly (went from 1080 24") and it's sharper, bigger and I can still easily see the fonts without being able to see the pixels themselves. I tried a 32" 4k screen and seeing all the fonts and lines was actually really hard even at 2ft distance. I got a lot more real estate on the screen but it was so much harder to read things, it wasn't worth it. Also, getting a 4K screen and then up-rezzing (running it at a lower native resolution) doesn't work well. It ends up blurry looking and makes it hard to read small fonts as well, and negates the 4K costs. It's much better going with a lower resolution monitor in this case. I also used two monitors for a while and that line between them is ANNOYING. You'd think you'd get used to it but I couldn't and I just went with a single monitor after a while.

This is great - my current monitor is 2560 x 1080 and I feel like I am "mostly" missing vertical space. 2560x1440 in a 32" format could be exactly what I think I want, and like you said, cheaper than a 4K so thats a bonus. I might just wall mount the older one behind the current spot to push things up there when I want them out of the way, but visible. One monitor may be enough with the larger screen size. I fired up PT on my other laptop which has a 4K attached to it and....yeah, its getting kinda tiny there.....

I had to search for a while to find an ultra-wide monitor that was not curved. Having a large flat panel reflecting sound between speakers is bad enough, no need to add something that's the opposite of a polycylindrical diffusor. I ended up with an LG, and it's fine.

Answer to the original question: It depends on your eyesight! ^ This. I have to have my screen 1 meter from my eyes, as that’s the distance my glasses correct to. Therefore, as I said …. I will lot use a screen larger than 24”
