...that is ECC83, correct?...that's a 12AX7 tube...I generally swap out 12AX7s to a good quality 12AT7 (like a late 50's GE 6201) or 12AY7 (50's GE 6072) for use in a microphone...12AX7 have high gain/mu ratings (100) and are prone to audible noise and distortion...the 12AT7 is rated 60 and the 12AY7 is rated 44, so you'll need a bit more gain from the mic preamp, but you should hear a cleaner signal with a good quality (low-noise) tube... ...if he does decide to stay with an ECC83, Telefunken is highly rated (and expensive) BUT there is an abundance of counterfeit Tele ECC83 tubes on the market...more info here: www.audiotubes.com/12ax7.htm

Not a direct replacement, but it often works without problems. Just make sure you know your specs! I'd recommend JAN tubes for their durability and stability.

I'd recommend JAN tubes for their durability and stability. ...Joint Army Navy tubes, exactly...that's why I suggested a 6201 (industrial/military-grade 12AT7) or 6072 (industrial/military-grade 12AY7)... ...for standard 12AX7 replacement, the 12AX7WA, 7025 or 5751WA are military-grade options...
