Interface is a MOTU M4, my CPU is a 5600X. When I monitor directly from the interface, it seems all good, but once I monitor from the DAW I can hear crackling and even cutting out.. it seems to go away almost entirely or be inaudible at 44.1, but as soon as I try a higher sample rate like 48-96khz even with highest buffer setting I still get crackling, could this be CPU related? Even at 44.1 once the plugins and tracks pile up I believe the crackling can still come back in.. If I recall correctly
I find this odd cause I don’t remember my apollo doing this at high sample rates but I could be wrong, maybe cause I monitored from their DSP processing

Is the crackling still there on playback or just while you’re monitoring?

Is the crackling still there on playback or just while you’re monitoring? It gets printed in the recording sadly

Does your interface have a loop back feature? Check to make sure that's off?

Does your interface have a loop back feature? Check to make sure that's off? Hmm.. Loopback seems to be an optional driver, I don’t recall downloading the optional one but can double check

Maybe it's just a setting... try to disable "speedstep", "turbo boost", "C-states" in your BIOS (or whatever the AMD equivalents are... "Cool 'N' Quiet" i think?). But sometimes these AMD cpu's just don't play nice with certain interface's drivers. I built an absolutely RIPPING Ryzen 9 7950 machine. INSANE power. But in the end, had to build an intel machine because it wouldn't work with the Lynx AES16e pcie (or TB3) cards. (Paul at Lynx said "oh man, I wish you'd called me before you built an AMD machine. There's no way it's going to work.)

I would try to eliminate all the easily replaceable options in the audio delivery chain. So, if I'm understanding correctly, the issue is all once the audio gets into the DAW/Computer. I'd swap out any USB cables, and I would try different ports. If the noise is getting printed in, that is likely an INPUT thing, meaning your speakers aren't the issue, and once you bounced the recorded track, you'd hear the noises on any system.
I'd swap computers if possible. Perhaps you have a spare laptop of something old that can just eliminate the current computer as the source of the issue. You don't have to have the most current software or even anything great - just something to record a single track that can at least isolate the problem to your current computer. Swap out mics. Swap out mics and channels, and then mic cables with those channels.
For me, anytime I have these sorts of issues, the easiest way I've found to fix the issue is to 100% eliminate areas of the signal path. It's a giant pain in the ass, and sometimes it can really take a LONG time. If you know something that work 100% with your current rig, start then and work backwards to create the issue. That can sometimes be easier.
I had a noise issue with multiple pairs of Miktek C5s. I went through at least 4 mics. I had Miktek repair a set. I moved things around in the studio. Tried different cables. I tried different channels. I tried feeding channels into channels. I tried unplugging everything in my studio one piece at a time. I removed any an all power supplies. I removed the patch bay signal path and went bascially direct-in to my interface. I tried moving out anything magenetic in the studio. I tried entire different studios. The issue was always only in my room, and ONLY with the C5s, as every other mic I have was fine. Eventually, Miktek suggested a very specific Neutrik EMI XLR plug, and specifically at the female end. That, combined with Canare starquad cable in the mic cable 100% fixed my issue. Its really hard when the issue only exists in your hands haha. But this Miktek thing was probably from some interference from a cell phone tower or some power source.
These issues suck when they pop up. Best of luck to you!!

Disable all plugins then try again. Add them back one at a time and see if one is causing it.
Some reverb plugs can cause all kinds of latency issues during tracking.
Also, some AMD cpus in the past had issues with latency.

without reading the thread the first thing that came to mind is buffer under run errors without recording interruption?

MOTU interfaces aren't officially compatible with Ryzen. If you're using your motherboard's USB ports, you'll likely experience the exact issues you've encountered. Two things that greatly improved (but didn't eliminate) the crackles for me were:
1) Installing the latest AMD Chipset Drivers, especially if you're on Windows 11.
2) Switching ports. My USB 3.1 motherboard ports performed better than the USB 2.
Things improved, but I still got random crackles. At some point, I thought, "I should've gone with RME. Sound quality means nothing if there are crackles."
I eventually solved the problem completely by buying an external PCIe USB card with a NEC chip (NEC720202, though most NEC chips should work). They're about $10-15 on Amazon. Then you connect your interface there.
I should add that my MOTU M4 was cracklier than my 828ES, probably because they use different drivers. But both had the issue, and both were fixed with the external PCIe card.

Yeah I’d first mess with buffer size (increase latency) and also check that the recording hard drive is local with lots of gigs of space (not external or backup drive) then do others suggestions

Well I feel like a complete idiot.. after all the genius troubleshooting ideas that you guys gave me, It was because I had my USB plugged into the non “SS” (super speed) port.. 🤦🏼
I probably should have tried that before even posting this on here but all this info is still useful for me,
Still, I have been considering getting an upgraded cpu with the deals at MicroCenter I can get a i5 12th gen + mobo for $260 for peace of mind, I can easily sell my mobo and cpu for $200 or more!

Cool! However, it should still have worked on a regular USB A port.
For peace of mind I would get a PCIe USB card, not an entire new CPU + MOBO (and RAM if you're going for DDR5), but that's just me. The 5700X is a nice upgrade. The i5 is 150W (!!!) while the 5700 is 65W and about $170. The 5900x is $220 and that's 12 cores.
I just upgraded my 1800X to the 5700X and 64GB RAM has been enough for me for huge projects, and it plays flawlessly with the MOTUs. Just a data point.

I actually did place an order on amazon for a PCIe w NEC chip. I’ll probably keep it and end up using it anyways! And yeah I probably don’t need to upgrade, I always get tempted when I see these deals lol Looking at your upgrade path, you’ve left me with some other ideas
