Listening to The Logical Song - THAT is a damn balanced mix. Punchy, smooth top, balanced extremely well, wide...

Thanks for sharing Johnkenn , it's been a while since I last heard it. Big, spacious, dynamic, wonderful! A great song with meaningful lyrics. Here it is for those who don't use Itunes:

Listening to The Logical Song - THAT is a damn balanced mix. Punchy, smooth top, balanced extremely well, wide... Its easy on the body and spirit to listen to.
Unfortunately, those vintage, understated, non punchy drum tones don't relate or agree with modern production sense for many. A kick and snare that isn't hyper punchy sounds small and weak to the modern music maker. We have grown accustomed to it. Try to produce a song with old school, low production drums tones. It takes alot of discipline as they tend to sound 'low quality' by todays standards and the urge is to uplevel them.
As soon as we start with hyped modern drums, the instrumentation is paced to match. I find it exhausting listening to alot of modern music.
I have personal production 'rock oriented' songs, using old school, 70s, damped and understated drums. Despite the fact this allows for dynamic, breathable, understated instrument tones and performances to match, they sound almost like a demo when played against anything modern.

Yeah most of the production I do is modern country and has the big drums that I supplement. All of that stuff is huge samples mixed in at least. Be fun to go in and really have to make what you have sound amazing. Hell, most of the time, I just replace the kick altogether.

The whole Crime of the Century album is one of my favorites. Supertramp was an amazingly cool band.

All these people want the modern sounding drums with the silly transient that eventually gets clipped off by a limiter or just the fixed point pcm file. That 70s recordings done to tape are generally cleaner than modern ones blows minds. I was at a country music concert recently and the enhanced kick just sounded so muddy and silly with the subbass.
