Back when they were tools for pros, I would agree. Now they're toys for grownups, and they market them as such. That’s an interesting observation. Yeah, I haven't noticed a change from "tool to toy", but maybe I haven't been paying attention? Unless that was just a comment on this latest pre-announcement?

Exactly what I thought it would be. Very interesting!

Still pretty pricey though. More than I could afford or justify for 32 channels, unfortunately.
32 channels of Lynx Aurora (n) may be in my future though. Today's Apollo news has me considering options.

Today's Apollo news has me considering options. We’re on the same page . I’m about to sell my API console and change things up significantly. The black stuff is cheaper, but it’s still a pretty sizable investment. If I was already invested in a nice ProTools HDX setup and Dante, I might consider taking a look at this. At this point, I just need 16 inputs. I’m also considering Atmos, so it’s interesting that the black Orca is 12 outputs (which would be 7.1.4). I know I shouldn’t bother speculating, because I already know it’s probably not set up or intended to do that. I was hoping for a more encompassing “all in one” solution that was more like an interface. This isn’t it, and I’m not really surprised given the way Burl designs things. I would love to consider it as I’m a pretty simple dude and don’t need much, but it’s still almost $8k and not quite enough. I don’t want to see Burl start to “slum” it and make cheap crap, they’re aiming for the top of the food chain and I respect that. I’m just eternally frustrated as I seem to always be caught in the middle of these worlds price point wise…

They’ll have a lot to clear up tomorrow. I’m looking at the Sweetwater page and it appears they’ve got different high count card for the B16 and B80. Seems like the same card to me spec wise, I guess they had to tweak something to get it to work with the smaller B16? I’m confused . Also not seeing anything about the Mothership 3 yet. (-edit- never mind, I guess it’s just the difference in how they printed the text orientation on the faceplates. One is for vertical placement in the B80, other is horizontal for the B16)

One thing I did appreciate from the two emails I've gotten from their list since posting is that they were very upfront about "if you've got a green and don't need higher channel count, you're good. Still the flagship and you don't need the black."
I do like a lot of the new features like not having to set jumpers and any slot arrangement, etc. Cool innovations. Absolutely not cheap! I'll be staying with the B80 I have now. As packed full as the cards can get now I'd be curious to hear a black 16-channel I/O though.

This is more expensive than decked out Lynx and Apogee modular interfaces. More expensive than DAD.
