So - here's what I have in my older Brent Averill rack: 2 528 Missing Links, 1 CAPI 312, 1 Heider, 1 VP28 and the Heritage 73jr. With all of those in there, sometimes, some of the modules won't work, sometimes there seems to be a power drain where they go out for a few seonds, etc. Seems to be under-powered. Would a new power supply correct this? Or should I just bite the bullet and go 51x?

sounds like the modules are drawing too much power from the rack. Either the rack is underpowered or the modules dont adhere to the standard (VPR alliance??)
I remember reading something about both the BAE rack and the Heritage stuff and power... cant recall though.
A call to BAE might be in order.
Basically you have to work out the current draw of the modules and whether the rack can supply them. One option might be splitting into two racks, just get another API rack.. you are gonna fill those slots eventually 8)
cheers

I had a problem with the Brent Averill rack with the Anamod 660...it would "trip" a cutoff switch and one of the rails would go out on the slot. (A protection feature)...I could unplug and plug the power cable back into the PS to fix it, but it was a PITA. I called BAE, they blamed Anamod, called Anamod, they blamed BAE. BAE did suggest I buy their newer PS and the problem wouldn't happen anymore...Thanks, BAE. I probably need more spaces, so maybe I should just bite the bullet.

did you throw a multi meter on the rail pins to see if your getting +16 -16 volts? Get a 51x double PSU(not much more than a single), then you could adapt one of the plugs for your current box as to not render it useless, then get a 51x rack when ur ready and just plug it in! The 51x psu floor box is a thing of beauty! and my guess is there is going to be some nice 24 volt pieces coming into the market that wont work in a 16v lunchbox or rack?
I could throw one of these PSU together for you pretty easily if you want JK?

OOO...I likey...So, when you say, adapt the plug...How would one do that?

easy peasy, we'll have to get the 5 pin female counter part(cord not chassis mount) to the 5 pin male connecter coming off the rack, and instal it on one of the 2, 51x floor box cords, and keep the second cord stock, and ready for a new 51x box.

I don't have the exact current draw in front of me but my modules are all under 100mA per and the VP312 is less than 50mA. VPR spec is 130mA per module so the problem is most likely with the PSU. I have no idea what the Heritage is but seem to recall a slow start and below VPR spec current usage.

Hi Jeff, is there any reason you can see why the cord can't be adapted to run JK's rack off one side of your double floorbox PSU? T

hello?....echo!.... I guess you could just trouble shoot and repair the PSU, thought it would be a good way to get into the 51x floor box.

I don't think this is limited to the BAE rack. the api lunchbox in the studio here does it also. I end up turning it on and off to get it to power up again. I think the fail safe gets tripped for some reason.
eventually I swapped around the modules and the problem went away. can't help but feel it might also be a seating issue, or just one of those quirky things.

See - I just need to sell this thing - Hey, it works, it's just quirky - and get a bigger one. I don't think I would ever need more than 11 slots...I only actually NEED two slots...
