My phone is older and it just so happens to be up for a replacement. I went all in back in 2020 with a iPhone Pro, felt it was expensive but it got used basically every day for years, no major issues, and so in hindsight it was worth it for me.
I watched the Apple Event to see if I'd get the upcoming newest model, overall I see it isn't crazy different from some of their recent releases (some people complaining) BUT...it comes with the first audio update in several generations:
Iphone 16 pro has "four studio quality mics, they provide a much lower noise floor"...
Also, the update to the Voice Memos app to allow overdubbing in speaker mode is pretty cool:
Was a long video, but just passing on what I learned there. We'll see how it goes (and if I take the plunge)! -Chris

They didn't mention how they deal with phase issues. They probably apply a small delay to each microphone to compensate for the distance difference; however, I wonder if these delays shift depending on which one is considered to be the main microphone at the moment, or would a constant delay be enough?
For voice memos it doesn't matter, but they mentioned "acoustic recordings."

I don't think Apple ever discusses much (specifically) about how they handle any sort of technical issue actually :-)
But yes, it's a good question!

I’ll run my iPhone 6, into the ground:)
A new phone just isn’t worth the cost, doubt I will ever buy one again.

I don't blame you at all for that...I've only had maybe a handful of phones through the years:
1. 2001 (hand me down "dumb" phone by Kyocera)
2. 2009 (another hand me down "dumb" phone, but this one flips! maybe a Motorola)
3. 2013 (first Samsung smart phone, lower-end model, not very smart, bad camera)
4. 2017 (2nd Samsung smart phone, decent camera)
5. 2020 (first Apple iPhone for me, was forced to buy new phone anyway since changed countries and the Samsung did not comply with local cell tower standard: really solid overall)
--> now I'm debating getting "studio quality audio" with my phone
Compared to my other family members, who are on phone #20 or something, I'm not doing too bad

I’m rocking this iPhone 8 and I wish it would die because I want a fancier camera. But it just keeps on going strong.
I use the Voice Memos app for all my song sketching. I’ll be watching how this new setup develops/is received.

Im still on my iphone 6 too. Will probably stick with it until it dies. I still don’t know half of what it does. Often not intentionally.
Cheers, Geoff

I’ll run my iPhone 6, into the ground:) A new phone just isn’t worth the cost, doubt I will ever buy one again. I tend to keep my phones as long as the work and keep charging. I even went with a cheaper Samsung 3 years ago, paid in full when I switched to Google Fi, and it still works after switching to Mint. I'll never be a 'power user' on my phone. Four mics? All I can think of is BRILLIANT
