Hi all, I’m currently working on a Beatles covers project and one of the songs I’m covering is “Paperback Writer”. Unfortunately, I’m struggling to nail the lead guitar sound and I’d be curious for your take on how to get closer, at least within reason. I’m recording my Epiphone Casino into a Vox AC15C1X, with the Dr. Robert pedal, which is supposed to emulate the Vox UL730 that the guitar was apparently recorded on. I’m micing this with my Heiserman H48 about a foot back. Here’s a rough sample with the guitar slightly EQ’d (some HPF and a slight boost at 3K) and compressed with the Waves RS124 plugin: soundcloud.com/the-mm-tune-factory/paperback-writer-guitar-test/s-N85w1rfQLRr?si=cfd3cd0d4b8e42879aa1b2732d913aa3&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharingThe Dr. Robert pedal kind of gets the tone in the ballpark but it all still feels very anemic. When the riff comes in on the original, it sounds like it’s going to burst through the speakers, and the sound of the room adds to its liveliness. Because of that, I tried adding some room reverb in the sample above, but I found I didn’t get any closer and it largely sounded too wet. I’ve been fiddling with this for most of the day, trying.different mic positions, plugins, and so forth, and I'm not quite sure what else to try. Thus, any feedback on any other techniques I might be missing that could maybe get it closer and make it sound less polite would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

here‘s my try at the revolver guitar sound. i made a whole EP with that sound years ago. seems to be a very popular sound! i used a veeery old semiacoustic guitar with veeery old no name pickups through a danelectro daddy o overdrive pedal and a vox ac15. what got me closer to the sound was than using logic‘s match eq and using the isolated guitar tracks you can find on the internet from the revolver sessions as target. that was important. the acoustic guitar you hear on the EP was also a veeery cheap no name gibson j160 copy. got close enough for me. theshea.bandcamp.com/album/knives-out-ep

You need a real ac30 and a pair of Blue alnico 12” Celestion speakers. The ruby and gold are close! Or Tone Tubby Chicago blues 12” speakers

Ok, I'm only listening on laptop speakers, your take sounds pretty good but I def hear more bass in the original. I've used that pedal, it's interesting, but I would probably try again without the pedal and more low mids on the amp. If you have a vari-mu compressor you could experiment with that as well as I'm sure original was reduce mixed through the Altec.
EDIT: I just watched above video...very interesting theory that's it's actually the bassman!

Clay's a massive Beatles head. There's another great video that goes into mixing and effects:

Revolver had some new gear didn’t it? A bassman amp that was meant for Paul but George used, George played an SG, I’ve heard of some Paul's selmer amp involved too. A rush pep box might be worth while giving a go. Lennon relied I think on that for a long time, but not sure how much of it is on Revolver. They all got casino’s prior to the recording I suppose… but dunno what went on what eventually…

Flatwound strings is likely a big part of that sound.
