I just can't shake this bug to buy something, add something to HW I have. (This is kind of rehashing an old thread of mine in a way, which lead me to getting the Bettermaker SPE) Current chain: DRS-4 MK2 AS Opto AS 76F Bettermaker Stereo Passive EQ I love color, so preamp, eq or dynamics wise how much "more color" would I get from Neve 1073 or API style compared to the DRs-4 or an EQ like the RND 551 or API 5500 .... or dynamics comp/limiter based on my existing gear maybe plugins ? : DMG Equilibrium well regarded Softube Curve Bender ? UAD Massive Passive ? But itching (no jokes please) for some more hardware, something versatile, useful , "fun" maybe Siemens W295 clone ? And as I am searching I came across this thread LOL jacobamerritt matt@IAA : Siemens W295 / Sie-Q Analog hardware substitute
Or maybe a buss comp ? Aaaarrrggghh ! Feels like getting the girl's number and debating on when is the right time to call. Maybe I sweat this one out and the feeling/urge will go away 😂 Should add signing up to to try some pieces via Analog Access this weekend

I sometimes feel like my biggest impact on the recording world is planting the seed/idea in matt@IAA head to develop a modern hardware W295 emulation A pair of those would be very cool, though you do seem to have a bunch of EQ options already. I would say maybe a stereo tube preamp would be a good move... Sebatron stuff is under the radar and just wonderful.

Your idea of trying gear on Access Analog seems like a smart solution.
Definitely try the Silver Bullet on there, as it sort of ticks all the boxes.

To the OP, a nicely colored tube pre would be much bigger difference than a Neve or API. Although a nice bus comp would be high on my list too.

Why don’t you get something designed for a lot of color and distortion like any number of things? Fatso, Drawmer 196x, ART tubes, Chandler Germanium, Overstayer, Silver Bullet, colour modules, distortion plugins that go from textural fuse vpres to decapitator, all kinds of flexible distortion plugins, etc ?

Rupert Neve Designs lowered the price of their diode bridge compressor by $1k. That's quite a deal on a comp that does a lot of cool stuff.

Well I doubt that is the only impact you've made, but if it was the only impact; reading the thread creation/evolution of the LH95 I say well done my good sir ! 😂 As far as tube preamp , I had the Blue Robbie - great sound preamp just could never understand why they couldn't put it in a 19" rack format eventually sold it it was always an issue of where to physically place that thing smh

Sounds like a recallable stereo comp would make a lot of sense.. Wes Rhea? Tegeler Schwerkraftmaschine?

Silver Bullet. Not redundant to the Phoenix at all. Have cohabitated with both.

Drawmer one of the brands I have always considered but never made a buy. I had the chandler germanium many many years ago that and the blue Robbie my favorite pres. Maybe I should take a look at the germs again, they definitely have a very tick colored character felt like there was some sort of subtle compression going on in the circuit.

If you are looking for an EQ, you might be interested in the new MIAD LCPQ4040 - MK2 version. It's not officially released yet but almost the whole first batch is spoken for by some private and commercial studios. Sorry about the messy photos but that's all I have at the moment. Attachments:

Did anything change from the previous version to the mk2? Apart from some cosmetic and design changes (new steel chassis, more accurate level-marking on the front panel, re-designed PCBs, etc..) the two main updates are: 31-stepped pots for the level control and the option to set the level range to either +/-6dB or +/-12dB (individually on each band). This can be set by the user.

For compressors, I recent bought a Gain Labs stereo tube compressor. I really like it, but it’s still pretty new so I’m still barely just experimenting with it.

We’re all in search of that extra 5% to add to the capture of a great microphone. Especially with vocals Current choices matt@IAA QP5 pre is astounding with tube mics! Locomotive WT72 is amazing with Neumann solid state mics Currently evaluating the chambordaudio 990 and it may be that elusive pre that adds 6% You mention an LA2a clone… and I think I read ‘anemic’? Does not add the magic goo you’re asking for. A CL1b or Retro/Ascape sta-level clone definitely will As for 1176 clones, nothing beats the rev A clones from RoDa, AS or Stam! Especially for vocals. Grinds transients into pixie dust and sprinkles the magic all over the audio!
