I'm gonna say it... I am... I need a preamp for beautiful voices. Not some grungy shit but true real rich voices, without noise or anything else. Strong, beautiful and sound, for around 1 to 2 grand dollar/euro. ADAT or other digital connection.

Yeah, of course, as an asshole I am, I wanted to go the Avalon way (in the not so near future), but it's analog (right?). I essentially am looking for something to connect to the RME high end card without pre's (which I do not have still but...).

Don't know how many channels you need or your planned usage, but I'm very happy with the sound of the Neve 88M. It is a two channel interface but can act as standalone preamps if desired. The 88R preamps can be found for 500 series aswell, the Neve 88RLB. Those have pad and high pass filter aswell.
They are more natural than the classic 1073, but works for more sources IME.
One could say it's a good balance between transformer strengthening and neutrality.
