Thanks to all who commented on my thread about mics I was considering. I went with a B-stock Atlantic (thanks doubledog ) and it showed up today. I took it to the studio and did what I often do with a new mic. I put it over the drums and did some recording. My drums were miced up and ready (though I did move a couple things and needed to reverse polarity on a couple in the mix). I just add the Atlantic to the setup and added a track in my Drums To Go template. For those who don't know, the Atlantis had 3 voiceings Neutral, Gentle and Forward. I got warmed up and made a little chart that is like a mini song based on a simple solo recording of just the Atlantis. I recorded one pass with each voicing in Cardioid (the mic also has omni and figure 8). I used the mic's 10db pad because snare rimshots gave me overs on the first try. I've made a playlist on SoundCloud with each of the 3 voicings. One each mono as the mic hears it, and three more as mixes with the other mics. I recorded snare and bass drum with compression, but there's no other processing (sans for polarity reversal as mentioned above). The mixes are literally just panning from the console and fader balance in Pro Tools. Recorded at 24/88.2 using only my Neotek Elan II preamps into a 1st gen Antelope Orion. Enjoy! https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/alantis-mono-oh-neutral%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3Decd6352828dd4a1e8aac68c8eaba389a%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharinghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/alantis-mono-oh-gentle%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3Da5c92b3e95b1472a9ce6df548fed3a75%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharinghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/alantis-mono-oh-forward%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3Db9a9ffcaab144f008809877e40b3af20%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharinghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/atlantis-mono-oh-mix-neutral%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3Dd3b3efd8585e4fe08fb525c1f8835cb6%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharinghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/atlantis-mono-oh-gentle-01%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3D939adf83b0644d319cd80e3cd47430c9%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharinghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/user-253717914/atlantis-mono-oh-forward-01%3Fin%3Duser-253717914/sets/lauten-atlantis-oh-samples%26amp%3Bsi%3D145262700c9940d1a451c5cf125fd865%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharingOr if you prefer to have the link to the Playlist: link

Sounds really good Tony. When are you buying the second one lol? At first I thought that forward might be too much , but I can definitely see where that would be the right sound for certain mixes too (it brings out the ride nicely but I didn't think it sounded harsh on the crash cymbals) Honestly any of the 3 would be OK, although I'd probably be more likely to start with the gentle or neutral and EQ from there if needed. Did you get to try some added EQ to see how that worked?

Before I did the full set tracks, I just recorded the Atlantis in neutral (which is where I copped the form for the others). I was listening to that at pulled up the UAD API Vision Strip and played with both EQ and compression and really liked the results. I could bend it a coupld different ways. Then for kicks I opened the UAD SSL e strip and tried to match the settings, and that also worked. Thanks for taking a listen!

Sounds very good! I like neutral and gentle, but see forward working in the right context. The different settings almost change the style of drumming for me. Forward is pretty rock and roll, gentle sounds like folk, and neutral could fall somewhere in between.

From my very brief time with an Atlantis, I loved it on mono overhead! I think having a pair would be fantastic. Like Nick said, I think I would use forward for rock stuff, gentle for folk.
If anyone is curious to hear more examples, I just posted a video earlier this week showing off the Atlantis on a number of sources (as well as comparing it to the Clarion and LA-320).

That's a really good video. The Clarion is an interesting sound, and can see what you said about using it in dense productions.

I thought the Atlantis sounded awesome in the demo video Warren Huart made. Versatile workhorse mic. Sounds killer in your clips.
