Is there a substitute? I’d particularly love to hear from those who’ve used the Schulte. Wondering about vintage MXR or maybe something I’ve never heard of. If there’s no comparison then please be honest and tell me there’s no comparison. Cheers!

vandaal-electronics.com/product/compact-phasing-x/I have this and it's very good. I've never heard an original but this gets all the same movement / character of the records we appreciate featuring the Schulte. I don't know if there's a comparison really. Maybe the Roland PH-830 or SPH-323? But my guess is that they're not as subtle or clear.

+1 on the Van Daal. You've got a few options if you want to stick your toe into the Eurorack modular world.
The Doepfer A101-8 is newish and sounds really Tangerine-Dreamy from what I've heard online. The Erica Synths K-Phaser is also based on the same circuit, but I think the Doepfer is more accurate to the original. And in similar but different territory, Xaoc Devices makes the Kamieniec which has a couple of different circuits and sounds amaaazing.
I also recently picked up an Ensoniq DP/4+ and it has some really nice phasing like you hear on the French Touch records. I have only begun to scratch the surface on this crazy box, but it might be possible to get close to that Schulte swirl with some more time spent programming.
