Hello everybody! Im going to buy a mic for my smaller "studio" at home. Got some mics here already (Warbler 87, MD 421, SM 7B, Pres: GAP73 and D.A.V. BG 50) I have a proper built Booth (1x1m) at home. Mic will be used for vocals, mainly higher soft female voice (girlfriend). We did some shootouts already between Gefells (we live in Berlin) and a few Ribbons (AEA 84, M160, M260). We liked the Gefell MT71s and M940, and the AEA84(!!). The Ribbon-Shootout we did in my well sounding studio room though (not at home). So my first question: AEA 84 in a 1x1meter booth (pretty dead) - any good, or no-no? Any thoughts on Ribbon vs LDC in general? Thoughts on Gefell and AEA? small booth - budget is 1500 max..: What mics you would suggest to try beside AEA and Gefell? Thanks!

Very different mics obviously. If you’re looking for a mic for higher voices, you should check out the Beesneez bc12a. Handmade c12 capsule. Tube just like the Gefells. Maybe a hair over your budget, but worth a look in my opinion.

A proper U87 of some type for most sources (I have the Beezneez u87 here and it's amazing). I have the Gefell M930 and it's a great mic as well.
I don't suggest a ribbon. I tried ribbons on vocals a bunch of times over the years and they work really well on deep men's voices but almost nobody else.

Hi, You mentioned ribbons, the Samar vl37 is as good as it gets with high end extension to cover vox, the problem with a small iso box and a ribbon is the figure 8 polar pattern will very much reveal the box you are singing in, a tight cardioid or hyper cardioid would be a bit better, the human ear/brain is sophisticated and hard to fool, u will hear the box u r singing in regardless of mic, ime

I like everyone’s suggestions, my first 2 choices would probably be Gefell or Beesneez, but if the mic is going to be primarily for the girlfriend you have a huge advantage over most of us who work for hire, you can audition a bunch of mics with her. Find a dealer who will work with you, something off the beaten path might just suprise you. Since you in the EU, there are a couple of mics I really want to try that don’t get much buzz on this side of the Atlantic, the Griffon GMT12 (FET) and 212 tube.
For Ribbon’s the Samara line is excellent, talk to the good DR, in fact that is one of the Great things about some of my favorite Small builders, Samara, Beesneez Signal Arts, Griffon, & Vanguard. You can actually have a conversation with the designer.
The other while I see in your locker is a stereo pair of SDC’s.

I like Beesneez and Soyuz. Sometimes 017 FETs pop up for under $1500. If OP can score one of those, there aren't many better vocal mics at that price point, IMO. In terms of the 023, while I love it on many, many things, I could not recommend it as a "go to" lead vocal mic.

Hey! Nobody's suggested SM7 + (REQUIRED) Cloudlifter yet! Oops. Sorry. But I did see on a YouTube Video if you get that Plugin Subscription... It makes a SM7 (or TLM 103) sound EXACTLY like a Primo 47. Chris

Not super detailed but for a rock vocal that you are gonna smush and saturate the shit out of anyway, it works quite well. An SM7B into a pinned 31102 with some generous slap is still one of my favorite rock vocal sounds.

I know SM7 + (Discontinued) Little Labs LMNOPre was cool on me. Love when the Pre is over 3X the mic cost! I'm a little embarrassed when I do the "other way" round. (BU67 into Scarlett? Really Chris? ) Of course my Inner Geek would still wonder about a quality Condenser (or Ribbon) through ANY Pre. Chris P.S. I like 47 FET Styles on harder belted Rock/Soul stuff too.

At home there is no alternative to "the box", as the room itself sounds bad. I think i just have to try out ribbon figure 8 against LDC (hyper)cardiod and hear what sounds best.

Austrian Audio OC818 for clean and slightly bright but the brightness means it can survive de-essing and compression.
