Hey all! Since many of you are Nashville-based, I imagine a lot of you are creating music for TV and Movie. How big of a consideration is Atmos when it comes to getting placements on TV/Movies these days?
I’m sure a song that’s famous for being stereo wouldn’t need to be spatialized, but does having an Atmos Version help newer artists? Are TV/Movie people ever searching specifically through Atmos libraries or more incentivized to use this music when the final product will go to surround sound?
Thanks in advance!

LA is still the capitol for TV/Film. And no, no need for Atmos. I've never been asked for it, and I've got music in thousands of films and TV shows. If you are on a large film you MIGHT be asked for 5.1 stems. I'm also in well over a dozen top libraries, and none have ever asked for Atmos. Usually stereo, with the occasional ask for broken out stems.
IF Atmos is on the production companies deliverables, the remix engineers generally want to be the ones to do it.

(How does that work btw? Do they need your whole session or maybe all steps, or can they Atmos it from stereo/5.1 stems?)

From what I understand, as an artist having an Atmos mix might help you with placement on Apple playlist. The few times I've had to go back to material I've worked on to make an Atmos version/send files to an Atmos engineer it was actually paid for by Apple, not the artist themselves, so Apple can have those records in their catalog.
I've never heard an actual artist say "my fans want an Atmos version of my album". And I've never had an artist say "can you make me an Atmos mix for a song placement?"
Next week I'm working on music for Disney and there was no mention of Atmos and they just want a stereo mix.
Don't let the worry about needing Atmos versions of your music get in the way of making your art. Just make the best music you can and enjoy doing it.

Film people are so used to having a specific way they like to place music in their beds, I’m sure most of them would prefer to have a stereo file anyway. I’m not even sure how you would do the deliverable for an Atmos mix for TV/Film. As an engineer/artist, I wouldn’t want a third party having the ability to muck up my mix just so it would sit better in the production.
I’m sure it’s been done a few times for music related films or something with like a 5.1 mix, I would be surprised if this has been attempted or requested with an Atmos mix yet. Again, I’m sure most film people would prefer a stereo file as it would be easier to fit into the workflow. I don’t think we’re to that point yet where an Atmos mix would be considered or needed.

After Binging the Bear and a couple of other new series you can tell right away the only stuff that is mixed ATMOS is a few things recorded for the project. Remember most music placement is for background purposes, don’t want it to distract from the film itself.
