It seems overpriced for a used one to me… tried sending him some reasonable offers but he said no.

I guess it's just supply and demand. When it was 2021 or 2022 the used Redd.47 units were not coming up as often, or so it appeared, I paid $2k (each) for mine used (bought a pair). I knew I "overpaid" somewhat had I been willing to wait, but they were mint and the new ones were more. Probably just a matter of what you're willing to pay, whether you're willing to drive for an in-person deal, and how patient. They're nice pres, for sure (and they aren't on my list to sell unless really needed to) - but plenty of good stuff out there in 2024! -Chris

I missed one on Craigslist locally for $1,500.00 so holding out for a bit (even though I’d pay more than that)… I scratched the itch a bit as I bought a Tube Tech MP1A and I replaced the newly installed JJ tubes with some NOS GE RCA and Telefunkens… (still trying to decide the best combo of NOS tubes)… but wow, it sounds so good! I heard about it as another person on Facebook marketplace (who would have sold me his REDD.47 locally for $1,600.00 (missed out again)) told me his friend was borrowing the Redd and decided not to buy it as he preferred his Tubetech MP1A on vocals… He said the Redd sounded brighter and more high mid forward (which wouldn’t probably serve my voice as well) — Do you find the Redd.47 pretty aggressive in the high mids for vocals? I like the TG2 500 series for vocals, but even read the Redd.47 is more high mid aggressive than it? the MP1A sounds like my V72 with the NOS tubes but just maybe a bit bigger sound stage… have been playing with running the MP1A into the line input of the V72 for more vibes and it is pretty sweet… and then to the LA2A… now just maybe thinking of picking up a Pultec clone for the chain to complete it… I still do wish I could hear the Redd.47 though as always looking for the best vocal chain! The MP1A though is a sleeper… wow it sounds so good on my vocals… clear but also with Telefunkens in the circuit a really nice vibey compression and huge sounding. I bought the MP1A from a really famous mixing engineer doing huge hip hop records and who has a lot of platinum records. He recorded some huge singers on it but with the JJ tubes (which sound great but very clean for more urban stuff makes sense — I like a bit more grit though, so digging the NOS tubes). He said he is mixing more and recording less and so just sticking to 1073s for rap vocals but he said if he was recording folk or rock or anything with more vibes he would have kept the MP1A. He told me he heard the Redd.47 which he described as more of a distortion box than the MP1A and “very bright… much brighter”… so want to make sure I can find one for a price I could easily resell it for if I do prefer the MP1A as wow, it is my favorite preamp now (and I have a lot of great vintage options !!!) I live in Los Angeles so lots of gear comes up for sale here — I could understand paying a couple hundred more in a town with less studios etc…

I have a pretty decent collection of pres but the Redd.47 is my first proper tube preamp (I have a few compressors with tubes though) so it seems like you may have wider point of comparison. Also, I’ve not yet tried the TG2. To my ears, the pre has a nice presence to it (maybe that’s “mid forward “) and depending on how hard you drive it (and with different HPF settings) it can range from comparatively clean to a bit gritty (often still pleasing though). Overall though, I’d love to try the Tube Tech and doubt you went wrong. Plus, isn’t that unit a two channel pre? If so, probably a much better price per channel vs Redd.47 (and half the rack space). Enjoy!
EDIT: and Craiglist in LA must be amazing (similarly New York and Nashville)
