Anyone doing remote choir/orchestra have a recommendation on good stands?
My old mentor retired this year and he had these insane tripod style stands — I swear they’d kick up to 15 feet. Many a time I’d throw one of those beefcakes behind the conductor and shoot it way up with a pair of omnis and a jecklin disc.
I can’t imagine trying to do a choir gig with a 10ft stand.
Problem is, I can’t seem to find anything similar. His are branded AEA, but I can’t find anything similar online and AEA didn’t reply to my emails. Even worse, he won’t sell em! Not that I blame him…but I need a few ultra tall and sturdy pairs myself.
I see Latch Lake has some tall stuff — anything else worth considering or should I pony up?

They were probably Shure, I forget the model and I think they still are in production.

I would be looking at lighting stands. Either larger C-Stands or something bigger by the likes of Manfrotto etc.

Might have been a baby lighting stand mounted with a microphone adapter. I’ve seen that set-up mobile recording in college and high school auditoriums reaching up more than 10 ft.
Matthew’s Studio Equipment and Kupo are top quality equipment. There are many brands. Check out B&H Photo to look at what is available.
Eric is probably correct that they were a Shure S15A - 15' Telescoping Microphone Stand. Searched it up and they are still available.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were lighting stands - I’ve been meaning to swing into the local camera shop to see what I can see.

Unless you are doing it more than once a week, I'd rent lighting stands and buy some adaptors.

The Shure look close - but lack the hefty leg structure. KupoGrip makes wrap around shot bags from 5 lbs upward. Wrap them around the legs and the stand goes nowhere. I have Kupo shot bags up to 25 lbs and also some made by Matthew Studio Equipment. kupogrip.com/kupo-wrap-go-shot-bag-5lbs-open-box/

AEA used to make some great on-location stands, but when I tried to buy some a decade ago Wes had stopped making them. I ended up with a Manfrotto 269HDBU, which is awfully heavy by comparison, but extremely sturdy and will go to 25 feet. Lots of options at 15 feet - I use Shure S15A, but there are several generations and some are much better than others.

The S15A look good too -- wish they were flat black. Might end up a heretic and spray a pair
