If y’all haven’t read it, I wanted to share. I also didn’t want to keep taking over the Hip Hop Mic thread. Interview about the history of the SM5/7/A/B from Shure’s historian after the review. He also says there’s minimal difference between the 7, A, and B other than the humbucking and windscreen, for what that’s worth. www.soundonsound.com/reviews/shure-sm7db

I like how it kills the myth that SM57 are just like SM7s without the transformer.

Very interesting - so the db version has a Cloud preamp in it? Anyone have one? Any comments?

I have an original SM7, and I like it. None of the hate that Ward has for the mic......

I wish the SM5's were still sorta el cheapo. Where's my Wayback Machine? Chris P.S. "Minimal Differences" He means like U87i vs. U87ai? These "minimal differences" are our sonic RGO Grand Canyon.

"Current production has NOTHING in common the superior vintage ones!"
We have super computers in our pockets, but somehow the average audio engineer on a gear forum still believes technology has only gone backwards in the past 70 years.

I guess that makes mine an OG Sm7.

Billie Jean. The Way You Make Me Feel. But what's that even BIGGER hit? From Thriller. Name escapes me. Chris P.S. Also Vincent Price's VO mic on that.

I’ve built up a decent mic collection over the years but never invested in an SM7b (or any variant): maybe I’ll pick up an SM7dB at some point - thanks for the link!

I got a deal on one of the last of the SM7's right before the B came out, all I remember was being bummed it no longer came in the metal box..... Was having a laugh with a serious high $$$$$$ vintage tube head about how the same niche exists in tubes where only the very first production run of a tube type can be considered THE BEST AND MOST DESIRABLE. BEST is permanently in lockstep with whatever notion also commands the most $$$$, without question.

I also wonder if the SM7s just sound different because they're all a good deal older than the modern production 7B models. I've heard a couple comparisons online where the OGs are less low-mid heavy than the current models but that could be related to the age of the diaphragms.

Since Taylor Swift has more money than all The Beatles combined... Means she's the better artist. Right? Chris

The SM7 is markedly brighter (or, if you prefer, the SM7B has markedly more low midrange).
Might be a function of proximity effect, with the 7B's capsule being closer to the grill. Maybe it's something to do with the humbucking whachamahoozit that got changed on the SM7B or whatever, but every SM7 I've ever come across has been noticeably brighter than every SM7B i've ever come across, which I think precludes the idea that it's simply a function of aging parts or some such.
Funny enough, I've got a client right this very moment sending me vocals he's recorded at his own studio with his SM7, his SM7B, and an SM58, and the 7B is by far the worst-sounding of the bunch. The SM7 and the 58 both sound pretty darn good. Probably worth noting this is NOT a hip hop record 🤣

Also good to note its not just for screamo vocals. See Michael Jackson although I understand there is some debate as to how much he used one. Is also my favourite dynamic on electric guitar cabs, and pretty sure I have used mine on bass cabs and probably inside kick as well. Would love to hear about other non vocal applications.
Cheers, Geoff
