My current vocal chain is a CAD VX2 tube mic, into one side of a Drawmer 1960 preamp/compressor, into a Burl B2 a/d, which feeds AES and wordclock to an RME UFX. I also record bass through the 1960 instrument input and quite like the result. It seems most people can't stand the 1960, but I quite like it, and I'm considering the David Miller mods. David Miller is the guy behind the amazing Airfield Audio Liminator, and he does some mods which seem similar to what was done in the 1969 Mercenary Edition. In his own words:
Well, I won't be able to afford the Liminator in this lifetime, but the 1960 upgrade would be doable. Does anybody here have experience with the David Miller 1960 mods, or know someone who does? I would appreciate hearing about any favourable or unfavourable experiences.
The mic pre and line in can definitely be improved! We remove all 5532 IC
chips and replace them with Burr Brown IC chips. We replace any electrolytic
capacitors that test weak or bad with Panasonic FC high temperature parts.
There's typically 8 to 30 capacitors that need replacement to restore unit
to factory spec. The unit runs rather hot, so capacitor lifetime is
compromised. We like to replace the film capacitors around the tubes with
WIMA, and the original Drawmer tubes should be replaced with new JJ Tesla.
Total cost $500 ~ $700. With the mods, the 1960 can be useful even on the 2
mix.
Or better yet, sell the 1960 and raise funds for an Airfield Audio Liminator 2 !!!
