Anyone have any real world experience with the UAD SP-1's. In the market for a stereo SDC and these look interesting. KM84 is the sound I'm shooting for but I don't want to spend that money right now. Also curious how these would compare to the Slate ML2, or any others i haven't listed..

The Hemisphere mic modeling is pretty good. I checked out some of the dynamic mics recently (SD3, SD5, SD7). The mics are decent to begin with and modeling can shape the sound even more. I think it might be less subtle than the Slate ML-2's (I do own a pair of those but not the SP1 so have never done a direct comparison). For the Slate ML-2's I find myself liking the S-121 (R121) or the Schoeps (M222) models the best, but I'm usually trying to tame some harshness I suppose. The proximity setting (on both plugins) is pretty useful. The axis setting on the Hemisphere can be pretty cool sometimes too. Since they are both native plugins, neither locks you into a particular hardware platform (and you can use whatever preamps you want - just don't expect the plugins models to sound exactly like any mic, which they won't anyway no matter what any of them claim).
