Silly me. And here I've been buying gear all these years based on how it sounds. Could not care less about the looks. -09 Genuine question here... do you feel the same way about your studio? Like it doesn't matter how it looks, only how it sounds? Both. But to me, that's an entirely "other" topic. No doubt my primary concern with how gear sounds is going to be controversial. -09

Over the years my biggest complaint about gear appearances has really been about functionality, I hate it when a manufacturer either designs a face plate/ knob combination that makes it hard to recall & what really bugs me is gear that is impossible to use in low light. Kool is Kool but useable is even looker.

I'm really not a fan of 2 channel devices with knobs that are symmetrical about the center rather than having a left to right work flow for each channel. And wow, that SPL PassEQ takes the cake for confusingly beautiful. The pattern of knobs is sweet. I don't have the hardware but the pluggo always had me looking carefully and double checking what I was dialing.

I think studio aesthetics are important. I want a pleasant environment to bolster creativity. I need all the help I can get.

But I also feel like premium looking pieces (RND) or nostalgic looking ones (Audioscape Opto) can be part of an inspiring studio aesthetic. That's why I was asking. Cuz there are some people that really just don't care about visual aesthetic beyond just having a place that is clean and orgnized. I'm way on the opposite end of that discussion, physical spaces inspire me and depress me pretty easily. Not proud of it, but it's true.

Believe this would be considered 'Streamline Moderne', a branch of Art Deco. Yes, ventilation for tubes in the racks. Inside is all chrome too. That is sweet! With the hood popped like that she'd be right at home at a hot rod rally. I can smell the diesel from here. I'd love to hear that. I can smell an electrical fire …or smell my electric bill going through the roof! But she sure is a beauty.

I started a thread about studio vibe in the Studio Build subforum here a while back.

Yes. If something is just awful to look at or is designed in such a horrible way that the haptics or the feel is just wrong, then I'll avoid it even if it sounds ok.

This is not entirely related to overall aesthetic, but I really hate it when companies change the look of a piece of gear after it's been out for a while. I have a few pieces where I bought one channel early on, then added a second later and there was something visually different. For example, I bought a Chandler TG2-500 right when they came out and when I went to look for a second one years later, they changed the Abbey Road logo to a different one. I also have two different Heritage Audio 73EQ Jrs and they have different sized gain knobs and slightly different screen printing on the faceplate. I've also seen that there are different colors of the Neve 1073LB. This doesn't sit well with my OCD, especially when something is part of a stereo pair.

It’s funny you should mention that, in the world of live it was always a very hard sell if say a manufacturer introduced say a new Graphic EQ and the sliders didn’t line up with the old one. I don’t know how often a rep would complain that every sound company loved the sound but, the monitor guys wouldn’t use them because So often you would do a quick grab from muscle memory. Of course I’m also the guy who tried to convince Audio Control I could sell a ton more Anylizers if the LEDs lined up with the faders on a KT dn360!

I run a whole roomful of stuff like this, and it runs more reliably than modern stuff, nor is my electric bill discernibly any different from a month of non-stop work versus a month of little work. My MOTU 16A runs WAY hotter.

I'm way on the opposite end of that discussion, physical spaces inspire me and depress me pretty easily. Not proud of it, but it's true. After several decades of dealing with bands in my humble well worn packrat space, I can say there are an equal number of clients energized by something that feels like a rock band practice space versus those who want sterility, high degrees of minimalist and neat organization, with concerns about track lighting and windows. The first camp is turned off by the latter, and vice versa. All types out there.

I would definitely feel energized and inspired there, it feels like a creative spot to me. I guess it's about knowing your market.

I've got a pair of CAPI VP312 preamps. I built them at different times and the look changed. I know I can get the "nip and tuck" kit to make them both look the same, but I've talked myself out of it several times, even though I know I'd like it better if they looked the same (but they still sound the same...). sometimes I think I might like the old look better?

I also was just thinking about the UT Twin87. TBH I'd probably use mine more, and maybe even get a second if it looked more like a U87. I mean it sounds good, but just looks weird (to me, because I'm expecting the 87 head basket look). I understand why (Neumann...) I thought I saw something once about Chad doing a different head basket but maybe it was a dream.
