I put one of my Avalon 737s up for sale on a gear market here in Sweden. As mentioned in another thread I'm looking at financing a Retro Powerstrip. But today someone offered a trade for a vintage AKG BX15 spring reverb in mint condition. I've worked very little with real spring reverbs. Really enjoy some of the IRs in Altiverb and also the PSP spring (also a plugin). But I'm starting to think I'd enjoy and use this more than a Powerstrip.
Anyone of you have any experience of the BX15?

OK I really don't get the romance with spring reverbs. Yeah they are Analog, but it's the one thing where I find digital just sounds better Now a plate is another matter, but If I have to have a real spring verb Ill find away to use the tank in a guitar amp!

I'm not that crazy for spring reverbs either. But on some things when it's just right, it's sooo cool. Before my vacation I did a one day mix session of a very downscale homebrewn jazz project (vocal, ac bass and piano) recorded in the home of the pianist. They didn't want it to sound entirely 'documentery' so a little reverb was wished for. I tried a few different ones, wooden rooms, plates (Altiverb and Bricasti), then looked for different domestic rooms to bring out that quality of the recording. Nothing did it for me until I loaded that tube spring reverb in Altiverb with three IRs (dark/flat/bright) I believe I chose the dark. Did just the right thing, added a little sweetness without sounding too polished for the overall vibe. Another aspect of getting a BX15 is that it'd keep it's value, probably even gain some. Also agree that a real plate is another level. Then, next on the scale is a real chamber!.. Well, if I build my own place, it'll have both!

Spring reverbs have always, do now and always will sound like CRAP on everything but certain Fender, Vox and DRZ amps.
Digital reverb is a godsend compared to that crap. Now, maybe you can find a good old EMT plate but springs? O Mon Dieu Seigneur Doux Jésus!

I have a BX-15 and a Mic mix Master room "Super C" twin tank reverb unit. The Super C was the first studio reverb unit I ever bought. They were used on a lot of records back in the day. They don't get used today as much as they use to, but when used properly, they do have a sound, almost plate like, and a place in todays music. I still keep them around.

Nothing sounds or sits in a mix (other then a plate) like a spring reverb. I have 4, use them all the time. Usually with different pre delays in front of each one. They have a thing, if it's not for you then cool, but there has never been, at least to my knowledge a digital emulation that recreates what a great spring reverb or a plate can do....

The AKG can be so smooth... it's not boingy like most people think of when they think of springs.

My first 'verb was an Orban stereo spring. One side sounded different than the other, but it was stylin' for its day in a TEAC 1/4" studio.

Several times in recent years I've asked mix guys in Nashville… "what's that cool verb on the vocal (or drums)" and it was the AKG. If I had room for it, I'd get one bc it's unlike anything else.

I was unfamiliar with this box, but it sounds pretty cool in this video. Could be a cool vibe piece for your studio. Good luck.

I was seriously unimpressed by the BX 20 so I never bothered checking any more out.

Johnkenn… do u remember which one Reid Shippen has? I think it's the BX20… he played me some mixes for Lucie Silvas that he used it on. Sounded great on her vocal.
