I just added an Apollo x8 to my setup that already included an x8 and an original, Silverface twin. The whole setup was working fine for a few days, then I started getting an error that said "cannot use thunderbolt accessory", which applies to the second x8 in the chain and the Twin.
Very odd that this just happened suddenly. I can connect any of the units directly to the computer (M2 MacBook Pro, Ventura 13.6.7) and get them to be seen. But with everything connected, only that first x8 in the chain will work. I've confirmed that all of the cables will work as well. Any guesses on what could be causing this? Everything was rock-solid until I added the second Apollo x8.

I’ve had this happen before, sounds like one of the cables has an issue.

And what happens if you switch order of x8s ? Same thing, just the lead Apollo will be recognized.

Them I'm using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter connected to an Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable to the Twin. Can use any of these cables to connect directly to the computer with no issues. It's just daisy chaining that causes issues

Interesting but that confirms that cable and both apollos are ok, problem is downstream from first apollo . Have you taken cable after Apollo and used it first, that would confirm it’s ok too, and then problem starts at connection ti last interface (twin). I believe you can run up to 6 devices but only 1 can be a twin: correct ?

I would take the Twin out of the chain and see if it's working correctly. Might be a good starting point.

Twin connects just fine if I'm connecting directly to the computer. The issue is always whatever is downstream from the lead Apollo

Really hoping this is just a freak issue with a cable or something. Again, all of the cables and interfaces will connect directly to the computer, it's the daisy chaining that's the issue. Very weird

And you can’t do twin first cus it’s tb2? Twin always has to come last in the multi Apollo chain.

Even if tb 3?

There's only 1 Thunderbolt port on it, so you can't daisy chain. It also has to be at the end of the Apollo chain because of that (I think the same applies with the larger x4. Only one "desktop" unit per system).

Oh ya, I forgot, I think the bla mod adds another tb port ? I don't think so. Even if they did, it would take some sort of hack with the UA software to pull it off. Really no point.

Oh ya, I forgot, I think the bla mod adds another tb port ? That would be the first time BLA did anything more than add some capacitors, change some op amps and maybe a power supply.

Agreed, but it made the twin much more useable.

Looks like it was a digital out they added, but aren’t now due to supply issues? But never offered with usb due to space constraints.
“Description We are offering the following modification for the Apollo Twin Mk1, Mk2, and USB: Premium Mod Analog – New, high performance op-amps on analog inputs and outputs (mic preamps, line inputs, and line outputs) – New, high-grade signal path capacitors on analog inputs (mic preamps & line inputs) – Improving the performance of the analog stage circuits makes a drastic difference for tracking, mixing, and mastering (expect amazing micro-dynamics and space)! Digital – Proprietary decoupling on all A/D and D/A converters – Our approach to converter decoupling reduces noise generated during the conversion process, leaving you with crisp, clear audio! – New, full scale optical output via a mini TOSLINK jack that mirrors Monitor L & R”

Quick update - this issue was the Thunderbolt cable from the lead Apollo to the computer. Very weird, as it was working with just a single x8 and the Twin. I replaced it with an Apple cable and everything seems solid.

I replaced it with an Apple cable and everything seems solid. I’ve had two “mystery cable” issues with my Apollos over the years. They worked great on any single interface or other device, but didn’t like being in a chain. UA couldn’t figure it out either time, and neither could I. I hate these kinds of mystery problems, it stays in the back of your mind when you know it could happen again and you’ll never know why or how to fix it. I’ve kept two spare TB cables in the drawer since then…

I’ve kept two spare TB cables in the drawer since then… Yeah, I ended up buying spares as well. Can't imagine the frustration of having these go down in the middle of a session. I also found out the hard way that Apple no longer sells Thunderbolt 3 cables, so I ended up buying a 4, which was stupid expensive. I was stubbornly dismissing the cables as a potential issue since everything was working prior to this issue. I ended up with a support ticket with UA (they said to re-seat the Thunderbolt card, which didn't end up needing to happen. Got the new cable before I got a response from them) and a customer support call to Apple. Before getting the new cable, I completely wiped/clean installed the OS on my computer, so not being a thorough troubleshooter ended up costing me many hours of my life, lol. Learn from my mistakes - test your cables!

Learn from my mistakes - test your cables! Don't feel bad, you did the exact same thing I did after testing everything thoroughly. "It can't be the cable, it's working on its own".... Funny enough, I had to switch my control room around and run my Apollo through a longer TB2 cable and use an Apple adapter to go into my newer TB3 mac. I expected to have problems and it's been rock solid. Go figure... (I'm knocking on wood right now to be safe)
