Hey all, I thought I'd make a thread about Richard Land Audio in Nashville. I contacted him about giving my D12 the once over because it just wasn't sounding right. I hadn't used it in quite a while because of it, and I've been fighting with BD sounds lately (I actually think BDs are one of the hardest things to get right).
Richard quoted a flat fee, and mentioned if he couldn't get it sounding right there would be a smaller bench fee for his time. It was all very fair, so I sent the mic out, and I got a message from him a couple days after it arrived. I sent him payment and the mic got here quickly.
I put it in my 22" Yamaha Maple Cutsom Absolute, which I tuned pretty far down. The mic sounded good, but I still moved it around and ended up doing some EQ and compression in recording.
I made a quick mix. I was going to post a raw this is how it sounds version, but as I kept working I decided to give the mix more of the treatment I would for a client. So this has all the processing one might expect.
Please forgive the obvious "SanFilippo didn't warm up" moments in this

Kicks me in the chest here at my place.

Nice! +1 for Richard Land, Land has fixed two of my older 451s and one of my older 414s back in 2020 and 2021. Good price, great communication and fast turnaround. When he gave my D12e repair a shot, (no low end...) unfortunately he wasn't able to revive it.

Kicks me in the chest here at my place. Thanks, man. I'm happy with it, thought the FET 47 is a cool part of the sound as well. This was prep for a session Tuesday, and when I went in to listen to takes after playing I was really happy with the BD sound, more than I often am. "realigning" if i get it right is re-centering the membrane, making sure there's no magnetic dust/dirt on the membrane which will pull it a bit to the side and keeps the membrane from moving freely. The kick sounds fine to me. The pillow-y tone i associate with a D12 is there. I have had two dozend D12s and most of them are off spec by now and one in ten sounds like it should, so my advice would be to only buy it from reliable sources or not at all.

A big +1 for Richard Land. He fixed a damaged AKG C-460 for me. And replaced the diaphragm in the cap. Came back just perfect. Reasonable price, and a super nice person as well.

Guys like Mr. Land who do that kind of work are modern day SAINTS in my book.

For anybody looking to get an AKG D12 ... rather look for a D20. Because the typical D12 spent decades of its life in a damp basement as a vocal mic for band rehearsals. The D20 had a selected capsule and was even more expensive than the D12 in it's day and so was used in recording or radio stations.

I think the Heil PR-40 is somewhat similar to a D12, albeit with a upper midrange lift, which is something one might typically apply to a D12 anyways. Its not quite as pillowy, but can get a similar vibe if one is looking to avoid the crapshoot of buying 5 vintage mics to find one good one.

I used one of those at a conference last year and thought it sounded cool in the house BD. I've almost bought one on reverb a few times.
