I've been in the process of revamping my rig to deal with different input latency of different converters. I have an Apollo x8 that I was running with an original silver Apollo Twin and an ADAT 500 Series rack. I was having issues with the rack and also hated the fact that material recorded through it was a few samples off from the Apollo, so I replaced with another Apollo x8. So now I have 16 channels of matching conversion, but still have the old Twin in the setup as well. I'm wondering if the Twin would also have slightly different latency than the x8?
I'm wanting to grab a 2-channel preamp that would be normalled to the Twin's line ins. If I were to do this, would I get any weird phase issues if I'm multi-micing something across the different converters or do the Apollo drivers make sure everything is lined up in a multi-unit setup?

Depends on the topology, but whichever is the first interface will likely have the shortest latency, anything connected off that slightly longer (but were talking microseconds to milliseconds difference). I believe in the case of the Apollo x8, the computer is connected (via TB) to the first interface (the primary or monitor) and then the secondary interface is connected off that, so there may be a slight latency difference. I'm not sure if the TB ports are some kind of hub or a switch. A true hub might not have any extra latency but a switch would. The manuals are not 100% clear on that, so the only way to really know is to test it. Run a signal out of the first interface (or from an external source) and split it into the first and second interface and see if they line up or not. Same for the Twin.
I always wondered (assuming your computer has enough TB ports) if you ran a "star" topology - meaning each interface went directly to the computer (as opposed to daisy chaining them) - if that would make a difference or not. But again depends on if the port on the interfaces is a hub or a switch (and possibly the same question on the computer)
The ADAT 500 would definitely have higher latency since it is flowing through (D2D) converters that would increase the latency by a small amount - but enough I always hated spreading drum mics across this kind of setup.

Just don't put anything that needs critical phase alignment on different interfaces. For example, don't put snare top and snare bottom on different interfaces, etc. You could put drums on one and guitars on another and be fine.
