I bought a MacBook Air laptop that I never use…just wondering if I’d get a lot more use out of an iPad. I could get a keyboard case to still have something to use for writing and I could use this in the studio as a controller where I can’t use the laptop.
Are there ones to avoid and ones to get?

I’m using an older iPad with a screen sharing app, but that’s just to do some basic controls in ProTools when I have to record myself (live room/control room are separate). I basically just have to arm tracks, create playlists during takes and set my headphone levels. Probably a different use case than what you need.
If you actually want a mobile recording setup, I would stick with the laptop.

I use two 13 inch iPad Pro’s in my studio that I mounted to Matthew’s Studio Equipment C-Stands.
They see duty reading music using the forScore app. Controlling for Logic Remote and Apogee Control.
At some point, I will eventually use for Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad despite the monthly fee.
They are useful in many ways as I work. As new apps are developed they will become more useful to me.

I bought the laptop just to have something for writing...and my experience was always that laptops were just easier to deal with for that. But the ipads are a lot more powerful these days. I could get a keyboard case and use it like a computer when I need to and have it double as a multi tasker in the studio.

Not sure how much you want to spend, the new iPad pros are pretty much laptops at this point. Even if you got one of the last generation models with the M1 chips, they’re about x5 more powerful than the MacBook Pro I was using to run the studio 6 years ago. If you’re going to add a keyboard and case, might as well get a MacBook Air. Just decide what you need to run on it and make sure you’ll be able to run whatever plugins or software on the iPad. I thought about getting an iPad Pro for some of the video stuff I do now that DaVinci Resolve is running well on iPad. The video plugin I use to do the bulk of my color grading isn’t running on the iPad version yet though, so that was a no go. The iPads are definitely powerful enough, it’s just a question of compatibility.

Matt brings up the biggest problem with IPads, the programs are there but it’s all the other stuff, plugins, interfaces etc. You can build a nice little iPad based rig, but realize every other choice is going to come down to what is IOS compatible.

I wasn't really planning on using it for anything other than a transport for Pro Tools...I won't use it for any instruments or anything. So I think the Air would be fine.

2 Things.
The AvidControl app is super powerful and awesome on really any device. Plus it's free. So that alone could be really nice. Add a Dock or S1 and you'll have a blast.
That said, an iPad is NOT a laptop. And while ipads(which basically have the same processors as mac airs/mini's now) keep getting closer and closer to being just a laptop with a touch screen. It's still running iOS. Not Mac OS. So if it's not an iPad app, you're SOL. They are super powerful and useful tools though. Just...not really a full on laptop replacement per say. IMO.

I was using mine yesterday with FM3 EDIT. I had Luna running on my main monitor and FM3 Edit going on my iPad using screen sharing. I have metagrid pro... and it has a profile for LUNA, I use that as a remote control on the iPad when tracking cheers Wiz

I have a pro that is my main surfing screen in the living room. Love using it in the studio, great to have a second screen for calling up plugs and for tracking myself at a distance from the desk.

With Logic Remote on an aging iPad I can bring not only transport controls, but also mutes, metering, faders, etc out of the control room. Great for self recording, but also for instance for setting up mics and levels on a drumkit without having a drummer or assistant present.

I use an iPad Pro as Logic's Remote for Keyboard shortcuts and macro functions and it really speeds up workflow. You don't need a Pro for that as its just key commands but I also use it with Staff Pad for composition and rendering musical notation with playback of orchestral samples - which is rather processor intensive So yes, my iPad is used in the studio on a daily basis and is very useful.

Just traded in my MacBook Air M2. I thought I would be writing more, but haven’t been really…so, hence the thread. Anyway - Got the IPad Air 11” with the Apple Keyboard case. I’m typing on it now…and I really, really think I’m going to like it more than the laptop. I held out and preferred laptops for the last decade…but the iPad has finally gotten to where it’s powerful enough to do everything I want…and then I bet it’s gonna be handy in the studio in a way the laptop never would’ve been.

I have an iPad Pro I use onstage to scroll the lyrics - uses a cool app to do that.
It's an M1 chip and I've thought now Logic is on iPad I bet it would make a good mobile writing tool.

I use my IPad Pro from the drum set to track on Studio One 6 and Protools. Convenient and powerful, use it all the time!

Not an iPad but I do use an android tablet every day in the studio. My daw is Nuendo and I have the tablet running TouchOSC as a generic midi remote. For me, it super useful. I have probably 100 or so functions set on buttons across multiple tabs. Big time saver instead of hunting through endless menus.

I just bought a refurbed one to use w LP iOS as a writing tool and maybe for lightweight remote recording. Haven’t really set it up yet, so I’m following this thread with interest. Love to hear more about how people are using it.

PS: For buttons and dials, Streamdeck+ with a Logic Pro (or your preferred flavour) profile is a compact alternative.

Madlib used an iPad and GarageBand to make Freddie Gibbs - Bandana. Sounds great.
