Interesting, the price is definitely right but I would rather spend the extra $ for the Great River 32c and get another mid band. This isn’t the old Harrison this is the Same Company that owns SSL, Digico, Allen and Heath Building stress in China Unlike Harrison of old.

These have been on my radar for months, surprised there’s not more info out there on them

Oh damn I thought this was gonna be the Great River when I first read the post. Would have grabbed more 32Cs.

Was Harrison known for compressors? Did they put a stupid hold in this like the channel strip plugin compressor or is this just the most generic vca compressor possible to build like a dbx 160 or an ssl channel strip compressor?
4x the cost of the Art Dual Limiter mxr 136 recreation per channel. Over 2x cost of dbx 560 used, and more than the 500 series balanced I/o fmr rnc with the improved sound and dsp. You could buy the Weiss DS1 plugin, MDWDRC, or Drum Leveller for that and fix the dynamic inconsistencies of raw recordings…

I think the Harrison32 recipe would be Jensens and class AB with VCAs and 5534’s if I’m not mistaken? It’s the same chips as in the cheap units.. however… reading the datasheets, the designer can dictate how the VCA responds by the way they build the circuit. So of course they all use them their own way. One simple example from memory(it’s been years), they can act on RMS or Peak.
However, looking at pics the GreatRiver stuff looks more Harrison quality to me. I’m skeptic of this new Harrison stuff, knowing how cheap and easy it is to pick and place an entire design. Would be awesome if they are actually taking on costs for quality. I’d love to see this vs the $150 fredenstein.

I think you are right, it was a cleaned up version of the last couple of generations of MCI. I think I remember a compressor being offered on some of the absolutely huge Harrison’s built for film and a Dynamic’s section on either the Series 10 or 12 digitally controlled Analog consoles. They were a direct competitor to SSL so they probably matched the feature set.

I soaked up so much from the very few things with Bruce Swedien that are out there. One thing I remember he’s sitting at his Harrison console showing a mix and he says something like “and that’s with no compression anywhere” then talks about how it’s not as important as we think. I think he did do a lot of automation? Point being, I think you are right, I don’t think of compressors either when i think Harrison…

Not saying Bruce is wrong just you have to follow it up to get the contex.

There are far more program dependent compressors that are far faster than anyone’s fingers automating a fader.

One of these days, I'm gonna get a pair. Just always seem to find other things I need or want to buy.

Call me a heretic, but I don't think you need to crush anything to control dynamics. I can't stand the sound of comps/limiters pumping and breathing.

Aphex, Weiss, and TDR don’t pump I’m also able to get the sonnox stuff to not pump. Most other things you have to use the gain reduction meter like the “volume” knob on a guitar amp to make them not sound horrible!

Would be awesome if they are actually taking on costs for quality. I’d love to see this vs the $150 fredenstein. the same stuff as everybody else. Better than prosumer circuitry in entry level interfaces and some multichannel ones, eg presonus quantum, MOTU AD, and RME firefaces, but worse than what’s in the good stuff now including the Avid rebranded DAD, Lynx, Apogee, etc. The answer is frequently “what analog sound?” When you hear the best done records. Take metal. Carcass’s Heartwork is pretty much the best sounding death metal (sort of) album and the production exceeds stuff like earlier Carcass CDs, Pantera, and what was happening in Florida and Sweden. On the record? The only really audible sound is the 5150 being an upgrade from the pedals into the Marshalls on a lot of other records, Bill Steer’s legendary Marshall Frankencabinet, and the martial arts envelopes of I presume dbx or ssl compressors on the drums. Then you go to Google: recorded on Allen and Heath Saber because the Neve VR sounded bad, guitars have a gml eq and are sm57, 30 ips studer 827 with no noise reduction, mixed on a modified SSL so it doesn’t sound like it went through a bunch of noisy synth modules like a lot of 80s stuff did.
