I've had an Opticom for a handful of years, and while I like it on certain things, it seems to have pretty limited headroom. So much so that I sent it to Acme to have them check it out, but they said it was functioning as normal.
This is mostly an issue on sources with lots of low frequency content (obviously). To get it to be usable on bass, I have to be extremely conservative with the level I'm sending into it. Like the signal can't be peaking above like -20dBFS, and that might even be pushing it. Is this just par for the course with certain vintage-type designs? I recently got a Sta-Level and while it's not quite as sensitive as the Acme, I have to be pretty careful with it on bass as well.
Acme put out some demo videos years ago of the unit and it is reacting very similar to mine on the bass clips.

I think it’s most likely the specific design, not saying it’s bad but it’s likely “baked in” to their implementation…in certain circumstances it results in a sought after color and others it’s lack of headroom. In other words, I don’t think the vintage designs that inspired it are known for low headroom.

Agreed. It is a wonderful compressor if you’re just wanting a few dB of gain reduction. Beautiful time box. Adds a nice sheen. Vocals and bass were usually what I used it for during texting. But when things are compressed aggressively it folds in. I don’t believe the full rack is like this from what I’ve heard but I have no experience first hand
