Haven't used the Aphex comp but everyone speaks very highly of them on the purple site.
Doesn't always mean anything though. They trash the 737 and I personally have an affection for it.

I've got 4 JW modded apex 651 expressors, and 1 ready for the mod, They are the most invisible compressor i've ever used or heard...period. I picked them up ranging from $30.00 to $150.00, the JW mod is $150.00 I extend this offer, find one around $100, get it modded and if you aren't completely stoked on it, the first 3 who PM me, ill buy it from you for $250 + shipping! I'm dead serious!, i would like to have a minimum of 8 of these for the rig i'm building. looking forward to hearing from you, although sadly, i won't T

For 500 series you can pick up the new Foote Pico 502. I think the transformerless one is like $300.

Anybody use the Aphex Compellor? I still have one and use it on occasion. They were "the gear" back in the earliest 90s - considered to be better than any of those horrible old LA2As, LA3As, LA4s and 1176s. They are still really good in certain applications, if you can find a good one. Good leveling on vocals, good leveling on the 2-buss to mix too. Other inexpensive options: (used) Symmetrix 525 can really crush nicely. If you need squash, avoid the local fruit'n'veggie stand and get a 525! Aphex 651 can also be used... although some people (ahem, looks in mirror) can't stand it. New: The Grace Designs M102 is absolutely beautiful and transparent until you abuse it, then it gets very Techtronic. Under $700. Recommended.
