admittedly, I've only borrowed them once and they sounded great, but I still can't justify dropping $1600+ a pop for tom mics (especially since I mic batter and reso, so make that a quad). I know they can do other things, but I have plenty of other options for other things. I even have some good options for toms.
that best mics under $1k thread has me thinking what other wild choices I could make that would be cheaper (granted, they might be less capable of taking a whack from a drum stick. hell, you could get Gefells with M7s for less (and they're side address, too!) or those Soyuz 1073s or plenty of other fancy mics. The Soyuz look like they might have a shot at surviving some stick hits, though they do kinda look huge, so placement might be tough. don't know that I would really go through with this plan, but just curious if others have taken the dive. hell, I saw Sylvia Massey stick C12As on Dale Crover's toms - surely crazier things have been done.

Samar MG33 mics should be considered. I have the Josephsen's but not really for toms. The Josephsens are great for Tabla and some similar handdrums. People like them on toms because they do sound good and can take a good hit with a stick. Mark Fauxman indicates that the MG33 mics are also rugged. They are also smaller than the Josephsen's. The first time I saw the MG33s, I was amazed how small they are!

I like them on snare too when I had access to some. Great mics. Guitar too.

Often wonder if an e22 would be a good spot mic for woodwind instruments. I like transformer coupled microphones. Would like to try it.

Yeah the MG33s are excellent on toms and snare. I also use them on acoustic guitar where they also sound fantastic. Price is too good not to have them really.

...and vocals. I believe Joel Little used the e22s on Lourde's vocals on their huge Pure Heroine album.

www.lautenaudio.com/tom-micThese sound pretty great in the samples. Somebody over at the Purple place mentioned they kicked the e22s off his toms.... YMMV

ATM450 if you don’t mind Ewing, distorting, crushing the sticky, plastic transient a bit and use them as fill in mics for the overheads. At that point you could use anything.

Also the Teegarden PPC-125s are great on Toms but I am a dealer so full disclosure. This being said I got 4 for myself after understanding there utility on many sources.

I did not like the e22s on toms. To me, they sounded way too modern and pre-eq'ed. What I can recommend, though, is the Soyuz 013. Hands down the best tom mic I've used.

i went down the e22s lust path for a bit, but i love LDCs on toms (and the e22s i borrowed really didn't wow me) so i ended up getting a pair of heiserman type 19s instead. remarkable tom mics, and they sound killer on just about everything. the soyuz 1973s look killer too but the fig8 and the 150+dB handling sold me on the heisermans. only reason i ever use anything else is if i need a tighter/dryer sound, then i use beta 98s and/or beta 181s.

They blow my mind on drums. Best sounding recordings I’ve made yet. It’s true, you get what you pay for. They blend so naturally with overheads too. I recommend them 100%!

Oktava MK-102 (not 012) on toms. Great isolation and sound like a bomb going off in all the right ways.

My fav tom mics right now are the Oktava 219's. Especially the Joly modded ones. They can be had for almost nothing. I love them for their organic, woody tone, and they are easy to place (side address). I also like the CAD M179's - although they have a bit more modern tone. Perfect for when the 219's aren't working (which for me is rare). The only other tom mic I'm looking towards would be the Heiserman type 19's. And also possibly the Samar SDC's.

I love the Type 19s on OHs, Snare BTM and outside kick but they don't blow my mind on toms. I have 4 of them though and they get used on a ton of stuff.
