Recently got an Audioscape Opto. It is amazing for tracking vocals. I never messed with ‘real’ gear before this, only KT (76 which I liked and sold, EQP which I didn’t and sold) and plugins.
However, after shooting some out, the RS124 has that sound I would love to obtain in a mix.
In your opinion, would I get way more mileage out of picking up AS 76F to pair with my Opto? or just buy the RS124 since I know that’s a character I love? I find myself still needing to add compression with plugins after tracking. Any input is appreciated. I’d like to get the most applications done with what I have

If you buy the RS124, are you then selling the Opto? On another note, have you looked at the RS660?

I have heard the RS660 side by side with the RS124 and slightly preferred 124 for that particular vocal take I had with me.

If you really like the RS124 tone, I’d sell the Opto but still get a 76. From what I’ve read/heard, the 124 is pretty slow (like the Opto) so you’d probably still want a fast option either way.

All your 3 options are pretty much units of their own. The RS will for sure give you more variables than a LA. I have an opto and a 1176 in my tracking chain. I actually use the LA most of the time. Vocals, bass and guitars. It has almost become my default mode. The 1176 comes in only when something specifically calls for it’s speed or character. Hard as an outsider to tell you what cup of tee to choose, but whatever is down your alley, go for it, it might not always be the obvious. You know your tracking/mixing habits the best.

I have a vintage LA-2A, a pair of Serpent Splices (1176) and the Chandler. If I had to sell one, it would hands down be the Chandler. Those other two compressors are workhorses and the Chandler is very much a specialty piece. If you don't own an 1176-style compressor, I would make that the priority as they are far more useful on a wider variety of sources than the RS124.
I use the LA-2A and the Splices for tracking and mixing every day. The Chandler is quite often sitting turned off. Now, that doesn't mean it isn't a great piece... it is... there is no better compressor for a bass with flatwounds and its incredible on acoustic and clean electric guitars, but because of the super slow attack and heavy handed low mid bump, it can be fussy on many other things, including vocals. You know how an LA-2A can accentuate the fronts of phrases if you hit a vocal too hard with it without something faster in front? Well, the RS124 takes that to the next level.
I think you will get a lot more mileage out of an 1176.
