I saw this coming for a while, but Pro Tools 2024.6 (just released) is now so big and bloated (at least the Windows download package) that it will no longer fit on a FAT32 formatted USB stick (the internet/Wifi is faster in my house than it is in the studio). FAT32 supports a file size maximum of 4GB and Pro Tools is now 4.62GB. So I had to put it on an external SSD drive instead (still easy) but I am curious what the heck is in there that makes it so huge. So many pieces are already separate downloads (like plugins).

Why is it bigger now?

I mean...4.6 Gb is nothing by todays standards.
Some video games are 150+Gb.
Your real solution is to format your usb drive into ExFat. Then you don't have the silly 4Gb limit and it'll still work on Mac and PC.

But I also had a blank NTFS formatted SSD just sitting there so that was quickest this time...

I was looking through the zip package some more and noticed that "Sketch" is a little over 1GB itself and a couple demo sessions consume another half GB. I really have no use for either so I wish some of it could be more "a la cart". I also see that versions of RX 11 Spectral Editor and Auto Align are packaged with it - and while it looked like it was installing RX, I'm not sure if it actually did (and I don't have licenses for either).
edit - RX 11 spectral editor is now integrated (like Melodyne) and didn't prompt me for a license or say it was a trial. hmmm. I would definitely have to read up on how to use it though. in a 1 minute test I was able to make something sound like complete shit though...

I’d think that’s in the add on packages. And I think you can a la carte in the Avid link thingy.

Cubase with all the options is massive. Logic in its entirety is about 70 gb. Reaper is 26 mb for the Mac universal binary and 12 mb on Linux 😎

It goes through cycles, the code gets bloated after a couple of updates because it’s easier to write a work around than rewrite the old code, then someone says hey we really need to clean this up they do, then it happens again.

I haven't installed Reaper in a long time, but is that really everything - it sounds more like it's just an installer/helper that would then download the pieces later (which would not work for me), but if not, then that's some super efficient coding (for these days).

Wel the basic program for Cubase is about 1 gb. Logic Pro minimum is 6 gb, pro tools 15 gb. Reaper is by far the most optimized and efficient daw. It runs stereo instances of everything and still uses less cpu than other daws. The only thing is lots of routing, fx sends, and vsti synths and amp sims will still sink it just like anything else. So Will inefficiently anti aliased plugins on individual tracks (think dmg at 16x oversampling, fabfilter pro l at 32x, pulsar whatever at 8x) that still don’t perform as cleanly as the more optimized strategy ones like softube, u-he, tdr, Goodhertz, tone projects, sonnox, the better waves plugs, etc These fake music productions cannot even be played back without rendering or freezing. The 100s of tracks of vsti and sample library overdubs…

Downloaded and installed last night. So far so good on Windows 11. Haven't tried any of the ARA features yet. Fingers crossed.

I just wanted to post here (before I update to Sonoma and this new PT) to have a historical record of me feeling happy and unstressed.

Does this increase in size mean that they finally added HiDPI support in Windows? 🫠

Installed Sonoma and 2024.6 and everything seems to be running smoothly. The new ara for Vocalign is bad ass.
