So I really like the idea of the Slate Digital Transient Shaper and it's "focus" setting that allows you to zoom in on a frequency range (some videos I watched made it look useful). I hate subscriptions so there is no way I'm doing that and the plugin itself is $149 where as the SPL Transient Designer is $9.99 at PA today. Is the Slate version (or at least that focus feature) that much better? or any better? I would mostly use it for drums and anything else that might be spikey (I sometimes use Flux Bittersweet on acoustic guitars that got too much hard strumming, etc.) but mostly drums - more or less sustain and punch depending on the tune. What are you using? Oeksound Spiff looks like another with some frequency control but I have not tried it. I've already got Bittersweet (free version), SPL de-verb, mo-verb and attacker (all from PA). slatedigital.com/transient-shaper-plugin/

There is a big Sonnox sale going on I think through today and I have been super impressed with the stuff. It sounds better to me than other plugs doing similar things. Check out Envolution and TransMod.

Hey Paul - are you talking about the plug in? I have and love 6 channels of Nvelope hardware, I wonder what the plug in is like?

The Wavesfactory Flash is a free transient shaper, though it doesn't have the focus feature. It's be helpful to me on occasion.

The “Slate” (Stephen and Fabrice are gone) is a ripoff of Envolution which rips off the Nvelope. Hit frequency and you can change it. The old transmod is way better than envolution anyway. Lhi st4b (“stab” ?) is too for side chained and multi banded madness lhiaudio.com/st4b/Honestly outside of Transmod and ST4B and the corrective De-Edger most digital transient shapers barely do anything and suck. The SPL hardware even craps up the sound.

Tectonic by Aberrant DSP is a multiband transient shaper that I really dig. You select frequency ranges rather than sweeping. It’s great on drum loops, tightening the decay on bass tracks, helping things pop. Powerful and creative.
A more subtle and sweet tool is Crave Transient EQ. That one you can sweep and do big moves while keeping things natural. You could use it in mastering.

Yes I have a few in my console for drums. They sound so good. Plug ins are clever but sonically they don’t compare. I use limiters before going D/A to mix though. Usually Newfangled.

Also frequently on sale from PA. Cheers, Geoff yep, $19.99 right now. Almost grabbed it but I got the SPL TD plus for $9.99 yesterday so I'm giving that a whirl first. Thanks all for the other suggestions too - more options to look at to see what will work for me.

I picked up the SPL TD Plus ($9.99) and Elysia Nvelope ($19.99, Plugin Alliance). They do similar, but slightly different things. They might work for what I need (until they don't) but the price was right.
Newfangled Audio's Punctuate was another that looked interesting (although maybe more complicated)

I ended up buying this one too. I downloaded it for a trial and it has a lot more control over the frequency range, etc. (which is what I was after), so I bought it - only $20 right now. I have several to choose from now so that should do it... unitedplugins.com/Nanopulse/

Checked into this - this is a pretty great plug in. Every other transient designer plug in I have heard has left me wanting. I have 6 Nvelope hardware channels - they sound really alive compared to plug ins
Now I'll have to wait for a HOFA sale

btw you can do the "Focus thing" super simple. Use Reaper or Studio One split and create a parallel processing where you apply the EQ to "focus". Add any transient designer there, and blend to taste. You can safe it as a preset even

The nvelope software isn't terrible depending on how extreme your settings are...it falls apart if you overdo it. The hardware seems much more willing to get pushed. I also find that the Native Instruments Transient Master is kind of nice as an effect on electronic drums. Pushing it into unnatural spaces or even doubling them up and setting them to opposite settings creates weird artifacts that add a little magic to dull loops.
I've been using the nvelope hardware on my reverb send lately. Using the frequency controls you can really mess with the sound stage to fine tune depth and height of a space. An extremely useful little trick.
