Have a female client with a very thin and quiet voice. She sings in Urdu and she tends to sing a good foot or more from the mic. I’ve tried various chains on her and have landed a custom dark 87-type, a Shelford, and a Manley Vari-Mu.
She’s looking for an at home mic… I’m thinking around $500 for her, maybe? Shure KSM32 was the only thing to come to mind. What do you think?

I haven't used it, but I am a big fan of their other products (not to mention their capsules built the reputation that Blue mics squandered).
The JZ v11 is about the darkest LDC I've heard samples of or heard myself, it also has huge low end. There are plenty of samples online.

What have you tried on her that didn't work?
The Warm Audio 87 R2 seems like a good candidate, given that you said e an 87 works on her. However, it was $399 brand new last time I looked. Now it's $700 for some reason.

Very close to a U87. $350 (for the multi-pattern), $270 (for the cardioid only) when I bought mine (which was like 8 years ago). The Warbler series also have a 3 position HF rolloff so you can tailor how bright/dark it is. Here it is compared to a vintage U87. Warbler MKID: https%3A//soundcloud.com/fir_out/vox-warbler-mkid-vs-u87%3Fsi%3D4ef914c0846a4321b8ad8a1acc2cd026%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharingU87: https%3A//soundcloud.com/fir_out/vox-u87-vs-warbler-mkid%3Fsi%3D887dbbe6b2ce408e950449c3fff8b880%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharingThis doesn’t sound amazing ^^^, nor is my sleazy voice all that relevant to what you’re describing. But you mentioned that you were settling on a U87 style mic, and this does show how very close the MKID is to a vintage U87.

What have you tried on her that didn't work? Nordic Audio Labs NU-100K, 1999 or so Neumann U-87Ai, a number of custom tube mics. My custom Barbaric Amplification 87 is definitely much darker than both the Neumann 87Ais at the studio. I want to try my Milab VIP-60 on her next; even though this current chain is pretty-great!

If more budget... Coles 4038 or 44 Ribbon. Also... 47 FET style if worked closer. With that narrower pattern. What's cool in addition about Ben's Studio Series is that the Elly was partly designed for "lesser Rooms". AKA typical Home Recording. Chris P.S. More (any?) Live Performance too, might move this Singer from Mini-Mouse to Roaring Lioness!

At4047 might work fine for this purpose.

At4047 might work fine for this purpose.
How does it fare in the value to dollars ratio, given that there are many more options now, compared to when it was introduced (2009)?

Thanks all. I’m finally pretty satisfied with her here now. I’m just not sure which mic to actually recommend for her to get. I’ve not used ANY of the ones recommended by you all (well the ribbons being the exception and out of her budget); except the 4047. I used it a lot for a couple years back in 2004 or so? That was a while ago.

My first choice for something like this is out of the budget my MBHO lollipop with either Cardiod or Omni Capsule depending on situation ( even if I did pay $179 for the pre and Omni used). In a pinch AT3035 from the lioness kit or a Shure KSM32.
