Not really C12 flavored. We try to do original-sounding mics instead of the umpteenth "totally a U47" clone for $50 cheaper than the last guy. There's plenty of guys that are doing it quite well already (several of them members of RGO!) and I prefer to provide a brand-new color rather than yet another shade of "C12 green" or "U87 purple". which grumpy old friend is using them on OH? Are you referring to Jason Bonham? Nifty that you're in philly. we moved out here 3 years ago, but the main operation is still in SoCal. I'm actually headed back that way tomorrow for a visit. My bad. I must’ve misunderstood what you guys were doing. That’s totally fair to not add to the pile. I’ll have to dig up some clips/samples. I’ve seen plenty of love from users. My friend Steve Evetts has been using a pair on OH lately. He’s up in Jersey just outside of NYC. He’s done a lot of awesome punk and metal records. (He’s not actually that grumpy. Just a bit of an old head that can be particular.) I’m actually just over in Lansdale. I’d leave the burbs, but I like having a driveway too much. Steve Evetts is in the current tape op. He did Incantation’s Onward to Golgotha, one of the coolest sounding metal records ever.

I hope people aren't afraid of trying a Shure SM-57 from time to time. Like the 87s, they work on any voice and can often beat an 87 unless you are in a really well designed studio.

Bob, have you found that also applies to the SM-58? Or does the lack of the grill/extended high end in the 57 make a difference in your experience?

The 57 sounds better even with a foam windscreen.

(Like Pippin asking Gandalf questions )... Bob, how would you compare the EV 635a? Does it tend to work on as wide of a variety of voices? Chris

I’m not disagreeing at all Bob but the fly in the ointment of the 57 as a vocal mic is trying to find one in a Studio’s inventory that hasn’t suffered from being abused. Even live I remember when mixing wedges if a 57 was used for lead vocals literally running to the mic after the band left the stage and making sure it was packed separately from all the other 57’s! Got in trouble once in Oklahoma for pushing a union hand out of the way making sure the vocal 57 didn’t end up with the rest, I have heard stories of major tours going out where the FOH or monitor engineer would buy 1/2 a dozen before the tour because they knew some where along it would get mixed up, OK I sold may a top FOH or Wedge mixer a 1/2 dozen and asked why😁

Y’all are actually tempting me to buy a 57 😅 (I’ve never owned one, I typically use a 58 for those applications.)

My journey finding a microphone that was the right match for my voice went from C414 > U87ai > TLM67 > TLM49. The TLM49 is a GREAT match for me, but you don't find a lot of people talking about it unless they have negative comments, so it took a lot of reading and listening to the scant available comparisons before it became apparent that I should try one out. I love it.

It's a very nice mic. Just so much competition nowadays in it's price range. Chris

My sales guru knows him better than i do as he handles all that, I just try to make mics (or lately, fix other brands' busted mics too). We should meet up at Backyard Beans sometime…although my favorite local coffee house is Brig O'Doon in Ottsville.

I'm getting my Lauten Atlantis tomorrow. It's in your budget and offers a lot with 3 patterns, 3 voicings, and a pad or boost, which I think might come in handy from time to time.

chessparov thanks for the vote of confidence. The Atlantis is on my list. I don’t need it, but I’ve used it enough times to know its value. The Atlantis into a good tube preamp like a Demeter VTMP-2B is a great sound. Then again, that Demeter VTMP-2B paired with any FET mic is a great sound… U87ai, Blue Kiwi, Atlantis, etc.
