There are a lot of very talented musicians working in tribute bands and they seem to command large audiences, so they do help the live scene. I would say a lot of my favorite bands have....devolved....into tributes of themselves. I mean, when there's only one original member?? I'd much rather see Steve Hackett doing his Genesis shows, rather than what became of Genesis. And I'm sure I would prefer seeing Jon Anderson with the Band Geeks, rather than what became of Yes......

I just did a gig in New Hope PA at a very old original live music venue. Ween actually got there start there. There is no cover. Just a tip jar that goes around. Across the street is a big restaurant with a stage. They listed 20 or so tribute bands playing there throughout the summer. Minimum 20 dollar tickets all the way up to 45.

Tribute bands are huge in the DFW area. I think they are stifling the original music scene here. I get that you have to play some covers as a way to sneak in some of your own music. But, if I want to hear Cheap Trick played note for note, I’ll do that here at home.
The other concern about the DFW music is lots of places are going to the “Open Mic” format so they don’t have to pay anyone but the host who may get $200 for being there for three hours.
