My Amphion tweeter blew, so while I wait on the replacement, I thought I might buy something different…my GC guy gives me killer deals and he’s talking up PMC.
What’s the take?

I know this is definitely NOT pertinent per what you asked but you did mention "buy something different" & you're in Nashville: Call Nomatic & see what he can do to put the D&D 8c's in your studio to try.

I only hear good things about PMC. The twotwo six are Spike Stent’s monitor of choice.

I have the 6-2s and like them. Replaced my Barefoot MM45/Sub combo. Barefoots had 2 separate power supply failures and lackluster customer service (nice guys, but pretty much indifferent to your issues). These work a bit better in my room anyway.

I have an old pair of PMC TB1. Very different sound profile than the Amphion speakers. Much warmer sound, less clinical in the upper mids.

I find the PMCs to be antiseptic and to slanted to micro detail over macro balance... I.E. not fun to listen too.. (my subjective opinion)

Or get some 8361a's or 8351a's and then you can get rid of your Trinnov and fancy DA as you can just feed AES to them and use GLM.

The 2 series felt flat and blah. The big expensive ones are where it’s at, but not in your price range and too big to fit in your room.
I think Amphions used a generic SEAS tweeter, if they will tell you the model # you can probably order it from Madisound, Solen or Parts express. Hell you can probably order just the diaphragm.

They can sound good and have detail but the small ones are colored with a crossover dip and boosted top end.

I don’t like the new range at all but my old Ib2i’s are great. They don’t hold a candle to my ATC’s though for natural beauty. My Amphion 0ne15’s are my NS10’s great for checking mixes I love them. I’d listen to ATC against PMC’s.

I admit I am a fanboy turned pimp but the D&Ds are better to my ears in almost every metric.

PMC hasn't had the greatest reputation of continuing to carry parts for their older speakers...especially any of them that have DSP...or the repair cost is very high and often not worth it...which has kept me away from any of their new monitors. I would go passive if I were looking at the PMC range. A mastering friend of mine had to go through 3 pairs of 8-2 monitors before getting a stable one and while they were great about getting him replacement pairs...that's not a good endorsement. There's a graveyard of PMC monitors at MTSU haha.

I've owned a pair of twotwo 8s and a sub2 for going on 8 years. I like them a lot and would love to move up to an 8-2 XBD system. I'll have to sell an RV I don't use to fund them though. High dollar!

PMC are found in super rooms for a reason. One reason is that they translate very well to all other monitors and, more importantly, to domestic hi-fi systems. PMC are mainly known for their very large monitors of transmission line design. That is a unique approach to design and one that offers tremendous tight and controlled bass. Midrange is king on PMC as well. Anyone looking at PMC owes them an audition, but move to the larger systems to get the real PMC advantage. I was advised to buy a passive system and then couple them with Bryston amps. I first heard the PMC IB1s at Glenn Meadows' room. They were very convincing and astounding. Glenn used Bryston 7B mono amps on each driver.
The real PMC set ups start at $15,000.

I like the TwoTwo8s at the studio. Better thany old Adams S3As. Bright, open, detailed. I think most people are used to bright like that. In fact, just a couple nights ago, a client brought in a friend to see if he had any opinion of where we were at with the mix. He listened to the entire song on the ATC 150s. His only comment was that the guitars were a little dark. Switched to the PMCs. Nevermind. It was now what he was used to.
