I’ve got a couple of 1073 clones (BAE 1073d and Heritage 73EQ Jr) and was wondering about whether or not a vintage 1073 has a detent on the boost/cut knob? The BAE doesn’t have it, but the Heritage does. Ultimately not a big deal to me in any way, but having never used a vintage one, I’m curious.

It’s detented

it is not detented on any vintage or re-issue Neve modules I've ever used

I would think he’s speaking on the the gain ( transformer ) knob and that’s a BIG YES.

To clarify, I was talking about the frequency boost/cut

Its been many years since I used original Neves. My 1080 series Heritage modules are detented, and they are replicas of the Neves. I can't imagine a cut and boost function not resetting to normal - unless it was a Behringer

Vintage? It certainly looks that way depending on what we consider vintage. But yes, detented/stepped EQ frequency selectors on modern AMS Neve 1073.

I’ve encountered original vintage 1073’s, 1081’s, 1084’s, etc that have been both ways.

The frequency is not detented, it’s switched big difference. Switched is an exact frequency and limited frequency choice’s a detented pot is pretty inexact. The EQ gain, I can’t remember if a vintage module had a center detent, I have used way to many clones. Even a center detent can be inexact, measure each of the channels and see how many detents are a bit off. One method that I have seen on linear faders but not on rotary pots is a switch that takes the EQ band out of the circuit, but again if you measure you find a often it will go from say +.5 dB to off. Of course this type fader isn’t cheap and often replacements are of unobtainium. Example it’s cheaper and easier to buy a BSS FDS 960 with a couple of broken faders to recycle the rest than it is to buy a single fader, if you can find one.

I’m sitting here in front of a pair of vintage 1053s and 1084s rn, plus some BAEs, and no détents on any of them.

From what I remember 1083's were a 1081 variation that had detented gain (or so I've read). The vintage 1073's, 1084's and 1081's I've used and my AMS 1081's aren't detented. Maybe those that are were special orders?

I’ve only used vintage 1073’s but I could have sworn they were detented/or the big Marconi knobs switch…so there are vintage units with the Marconi knobs that are just fully variable? One the frequency knobs that is - that’s what I was talking about. Maybe I need to re-read.

Huh…who knew? If I had run into a non-switching/non-detented Neve I probably would have thought it was broken.

switch the band to the “off” position Yes there is an off switch - but when I turn it on, I expect to know where unity is. Unity is at the bottom, pointing at the floor.

switch the band to the “off” position Yes there is an off switch - but when I turn it on, I expect to know where unity is. You will be very disappointed by a vintage neve module then 🤷🏻♀️ Edit: Probably also worth a mention that Neve eq never really has a 'unity' setting; the minute you engage the eq circuit, the tone shifts pretty noticeably. Even set 'flat' (or with all bands on 'off'), you get a marked change in the eq curve.

Ha well, that’s where it’s supposed to be, but ya hardly ever come across a vintage neve (or even a kinda old ams neve) module where that’s the case 😂 cest la vie, small price to pay, etc

The only vintage Neves I've worked on (that I remember at least) were 4 1066s we had at Overdub back in the day, and they were racked up that way. Unless I'm misremembering...

But what I mean is, pointing the hash mark on the knob straight down on an old unit hardly actually sets it to 'flat', because old units have old pots and old pots are not accurate. Hell, new pots aren't accurate either. Basically, we are all doomed.

Yeah, those pots were at best a suggestion of how much you might or might not be adding or subtracting. It's funny, actually. It made us use our ears rather than our eyes. Novel concept, I know. But yeah, there was no "flat" setting once the EQ was engaged. You either liked how it sounded or you didn't.

On the vintage 1073s, 1064s and 31102s I have used I have never seen one detented @ 0.
