...or some mods that I can do to make my Mackie Big Knob sound better / become rack mounted.

jcoutu1 Not DIY, but how about that Mammut stuff you posted about? Their monitor controllers are available in rack, and with the preorder sale seems hard to beat.

I was just looking to see if there was a DIY option out there. Figured it would be a pretty simple build for a beginner, but I think the Mammoth might be the one.

Sound Skulptor just announced a kit they should have ready by the fall. Saw it at Groupdiy

I just ran the output of my amp to a heavy duty 4P2T switch so I could switch between 2 sets of speakers. Volume is controlled by windows mixer..

I like having a nice tactile volume knob, similar to my big knob. The knob on my console is small and just not really what I want to use. I'd rather have something rackmout to free some desk space too.

Started a design a couple years back that did a lot of things right and was very affordable. Was going to try to do something with it. Maybe it's not too late. ;-)

About all you need is an attenuator and a recovery amp. I built my own and used them for years. I used a greyhill input selector rotary switch, a 1~5 k dual audio conductive plastic pot (matching elements first) and a recovery opamp, I like the LME40713 CFA with a servo.
Set that up and you get very low THD+noise, very low noise specs and zero degrees of phase shift. Bandwidth is around 30 mhz and slew rate is 2kV/us. There is nothing available in traditional voltage feedback that approach the sonic purity of that design. Everything else is a filter.

I have a passive Colman monitor control I would sell for 300. I don't use it any more since I had a custom MC made for my console.

Hi Blue, I think it's a very nice unit. I haven't implemented it into my setup yet as I'm transitioning locations. I ran a CD player through the RCA inputs just to check out functions and feel it's almost worth the cost just for the headphone amp. The fact that you can use it with a TV remote is pretty cool, but that seems a little bit complicated to me. I've purchased a whole lot of items from Jean-Pierre over the years and it used to be a little bit expensive because the Euro/dollar ratio was in favor of Euro, but that has changed quite a bit this year, so it's a better time to buy items from the Eurozone. The last two purchases I made from Sound Skulptor were shipped via DHL and literally got to me in two days. And I didn't pay extra for quick shipping. Well, DHL does have a Hub two towns over from me. Oh, and Blue, it's hard to tell from the website, but the front panel of the MC624 is a really nice deep Blue color.

A 1k log taper dual pot will also work very well. Input - pot - output to amp. A conductive plastic dual pot will work great.

Tony, my unit is at my ex's house so it might be a little while. You might find that info on the website.

What's the difference in the Mammoth Cave one and a TC Level Pilot?
