This weekend, I listened to an extended, informative interview by Zane Lowe with Billie Eilish and FINNEAS. At one point they talked about writing in the control room with Billie using a handheld mic to record ideas, scratch vocals and even some vocals that made it to the record. I got to thinking, what would be the best handheld for this purpose? I use an SM7B in my room all the time, and of course many records have been made with … Michael Jackson used it Thriller … blah blah, but if you were going for a high end sound in the CR with an easily held mic, what would YOU use?

M88, maybe M69 or even M201. RE20 and V7 might also work well.

IMHO the M88 is Thee King for this. (441 for the Grey Poupon crowd too LOL!) But... For "mainly ideas", the AKG D770 or D790 is one of the Princes. At a lower cost. Very nice sounding vocal mic. Of course out of Production! Chris P.S. RAW D790 "one take" with Reverb added here.

Problem with the m88 is the plosive issues and the huge proximity boost. Otherwise it would be perfect and it's certainly my favorite dynamic mic overall.
What about EV 635a? Really easy to hold, slim profile, omni so there's no boost or weirdness if you have someone who doesn't know how to do handheld.

for scratch it really doesn't matter, but a 58 will work fine and sometimes has even made the record (or at least for part of a song, simply because the emotion was captured)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have a 635A. I’ll give it a try. And I’ll look at the other candidates. What about a higher end handheld, like a Neuman or a Telefunken?

Just used the Telefunken the other night. Sounded fantastic. But... again the plosives were legit. You really have to stay back from the mic or just be aware of your "p" sounds. If you eat the mic like a 58 it will sound awful. If I were using the Telefunken in a studio I would use a pop screen. I have LDC's that have less plosives.

Do you have the specific foam wind screen/pop filter that Beyer makes for the M88? The way it is designed, in my experience, it lets you get right up to the foam but keeps you far enough off of the mic to take care of those problems.

In my experience, the M88 just doesn’t sound that great up close. On a stand at a foot away, it’s great, but when I think handheld, I want something I can get close to when needed. SM58 fits this bill for me.

So far, I’ve got recommendations for SM58, EV 635, Beyerdynamic M88 Lauren 208, EV767 and maybe the EV RE20 (bit of a day sausage to handhold. Same with a 441). Anybody have experience with using a Neumann KMS 105 or similar in this application?

I just use a pop filter in the studio but I'd feel more comfortable putting it on kick if I had a wind screen.

Behaves just like a dynamic and has fantastic side rejection. I've never used it in the studio but I'm sure it would work just fine.

Elvis Presley got great results with an RE15. Or of course an RE16 for more pop protection.

The Shure KSM8 is an excellent sounding mic, with great rejection. Almost no plosives. I mostly choose it over the SM7b ( plus it's a fantastic live percussion mic too)
This is a good technical review.

I have never ever had a better control room microphone than a Neumann KMS84
It's a great vocal mic, in general.
It is also my favorite microphone for acoustic instruments. All the KM84 sound, none of the breathing noise!

I track through an SM7b handheld all the time, I like it. If someone needed a more traditional handheld feel I’d use a 58.
