Mesanovic Microphones Model 2 Demo

I'd be more than happy to give more details! The Model 2 is a passive figure eight ribbon with identical responses for the front and rear lobes. It is completely handmade at our shop in Detroit. We do all the metal work, ribboning, testing, etc. The motor design is very unique. The narrowness of the motor combined with custom machined resonator plates, gives the mic a broad 3dB boost centered around 13kHz, and a low end reaching flat out to 20Hz. We use a custom made toroidal transformer from Samar Audio Design. The ribbon is 1.8 microns thick, 2 inches in length, and 0.23 inches wide. The result is a one of a kind ribbon sound. is your custom designed resonator plate responsible for creating the top? (i gather it is as ribbons are pretty simple beasts)

tonycamphd and svart: The resonator plates are specifically designed to bring back the high end that is lost from the high freq roll off of the motor. Since the motor is very narrow, it's roll off begins at a fairly high frequency-somewhere in the 9-10 kHz range. Without the resonator plates the frequency is down about 4 dB at 13 kHz. The addition of the plates provides a boost of 7 dB centered at around 13 kHz, giving the mic its 3 dB boost at 13 kHz. The transformer helps to provide a clearer, more open high end, but the main reason behind the high end response is the resonator plates combined with the narrow motor design. Many imported ribbons use standard available stock perforated metal as resonator plates, but these plates really don't do anything because they are not designed to interact properly with the motor. The Model 1 has more of a traditional ribbon sound, but still with an extended high end through the use of resonator plates. There is no boost around 13 kHz like in the Model 2, but the response does extend out to around 16 kHz before it begins to drop off. The transformer for the Model 1 is an Edcor rather than a Samar, which also imparts a different sound.

All of our ribbons are tuned to a specific resonant frequency during tuning and are tested thoroughly to adhere to strict tolerances in sensitivity, noise, and frequency response. Any two microphones will sound 100% identical, but some people like to have consecutive serial numbers which we can provide them with. Hope this helps!
