Ok…so I’m on song 2 for these guys. Much better performance overall, still waiting on the vocals though. Anyway…noticed on the first track that the bass had a ton of sub and not much else. Kind of just made it work. So I get the second track and it’s the same thing. Plus the bass player plays really unevenly. So I just casually mention to my friend who hired me to make sure the bassist keeps their tone up when tracking. I get an email from the bass player today…”I hear there is a problem with the bass, what can I do to help?” All good, I just tell them it’s all sub and I’m working really hard to bring out tone during mixing. Using a bunch of plugins I’d prefer not to use. “Yes I use very low tone. I have no problem bringing out the bass in my rough mixes”. Me- ok well just keep that tone knob up. Thanks! I hate when they tell me their roughs sounded fine. Like, I’m sure they did. Why freaking hire someone if your mixes are good? Just mix it then?!!! Grrrrrr it’s so frustrating. Also, I’ve literally chopped up the bass performance on both songs now so I can even out the playing. Im trying to help. Why tell me that your mixes sound fine???!!!

Another bass with mostly subs and no definition. 🙄 Right?! It’s loud as **** from 20-300, and then nothing. Like a ski slope. I mean, I can fix it, but I was just suggesting maybe recording it better. I ran it through a guitar amp sim, then an exciter. And I have 300 down way down with a low shelf. But their mix was fine. So…

So… I would just high pass the guitars higher than usual maybe with a gentler slope and use the bass for weight. Maybe distort it to hell and back in parallel if nothing subtle makes it stand out.

If there really is nothing proper above 300 hz, then even distortion won't fix it. In that case, after editing the bass, I would throw it into melodyne - export and the midi and use something like the Ample P Bass VST to get some of the highs back.
