Hmm. I was curious about the 308 but it had two capsules (I believe) so it was able to provide a much tighter pickup pattern. Though the price and monstrous size made me pass on trying it. This is intriguing but for $400 I would much rather take a gamble on Samar’s side address SDC offering

It's kind of a hard sell at $400 for a tom mic, unless you track a lot of heavy tom drummers. Think of the cost per hit? :-) The ATM450 is half that price. I haven't tried it though, so it may not be great. I do have to say I am using ATM230 on toms and I don't get any complaints. Sounds very good to me, especially when compared to my 421's I use to use.

Close drum mics get whacked too.

They are tough to beat on placement but sound is pretty thin - not the kinda thing you really want on toms (at least for the kind of projects I usually work on).

I think they sound great. And $400 is nothing. Seems like a great deal for a nice sound large diaphragm mic. I could see them being a bit of a pain to place since they are so short comparted to the LS308 which had more reach from it's mounting point.

I was briefly pondering what the Warm 414 clone might do on toms and then realized they omitted super cardiod. These are potentially pretty rad. That said, Audio-Technica AE3000s are really good on toms and a bit more affordable.

But I'd give these a go.

I was curious if Ward has tried these already. I didn't think the tom sound was anything to write home about, but it might be helpful for bleed and still get good tone with overheads.

I haven't yet tried them yet but I would like to. Based on my capture, and comparing this video to the previous official ones from Lauten, I think perhaps the 308 sounds better but the 'tom mic' is more compact and is easier to position for difficult situations. I don't think the audition and recording sessions they are basing the videos on are very flattering to the microphones and the sound capture is heavily influenced by the room tone in all cases...something for them to think about. But that's just conjecture. This is not:

I used the LS308s to replace a set of U89s and U87s, so I spared the Neumann capacitor mics further abuse,, result: net savings

I can’t get my 308 off acoustic bass to try it on toms, it usually won’t fit in there anyway. This thing doesn’t have the same pattern control though the eq plot looks similar at a glance. Oktava MK-102’s are killing on toms here, best off axis rejection and sound i’ve gotten to date, and cheaper if you can find them.

I have been using 012s on toms for many years. never tried those LDC caps for them though.

My 308 arrived wow that’s chunkier than I imagined but I’m guessing before opening it that it has more space for decent components.
