For the folks not loving it, double check the input level is above the indicated line on the plugins meter. The plug is pretty touchy about getting the right input level, esp wrt the de ess and leveling functionality. Not saying this will change your opinion per se, but it seems worth mentioning. Thanks, Benny - I’ll check this later. I did actually disable it late last night and try Soothe2 + Softube Opto + Weiss De-ess. I got a better result with the new chain, but yeah, it took 3 plugins. Part of my annoyance is certainly the way it interacts with the host I’m using. For instance, the knobs don’t work as click and drag with Vocal Shaper in FCP. All I can do is hover over a knob and then use my mouse’s scroll wheel. It takes a couple seconds before it responds each time, but it eventually does.

Not as annoying-sounding as what you describe, but still kind of 'lumpy' feeling, and sometimes jumpy as well. Can definitely be frustrating.

Seems like I did notice it had some funky behavior when you go in and out of sessions.

Tried this last night on a "live in the studio" mix of me on piano and an upright bass player for YouTube. Worked great. Mostly.
I had a lot of (deliberate) bleed on the vocal mic catching the piano. It took me a minute to figure out what was making the song sound weird when I got to the end of the mix and it turned out to be the Leveler pumping wildly and getting confused during the piano bits between verses.
Surprisingly though, automating the Leveler setting fixed the problem. Not sure how the lookahead works but evidently turning off the leveler doesn't disturb it.
And oh yeah, that de-esser is awesome. I had to stack two for this track but it felt very natural in the end. I'm one who likes to isolate the "ess" in the waveform and just lower the level, this really felt like that except in about 1/50th of the time.

I'd buy it for the de-esser alone. I hate de-essers, they all suck.

Shameless link baiting here... but here's the mix and the video. This track was "essy" as all get out. I'm an "essy" singer to begin with and then on top of it this song has a repeated line "shouldn't you be mine" which I pronounce "shouldn't choo"... so yeah, ess city.
The only thing I did to tame it was this Vocal Shaper.

Thanks for the heads up John--I'd never heard of this company. I know it's billed as a "vocal shaper" but I tried it on a muddy piano track and it solved the problem.

If it work great on instruments too, I'm curious to see if it works on a full mix.
