Breeders Pod is desert island for me. And the Slint stuff is hugely influential in my world. Really sad news.

It's legitimately insane how many of my favorite records he was involved in. The way that his work has measurably impacted my life, without me even trying to seek out his work, is impossible to accurately quantify. And the fact that he was an open book - so willing to share his knowledge and reflect upon/repudiate some of his past points of view is also second to none. He stomped the terra.

Yep. And in a typical Alibini way, he played the mixed games. Mostly older games that aren't as "in fashion." 7-card Stud was his best game and he barely played Hold 'Em (the popular TV game).

I was so surprised, he only put up a new video a few days ago. I’m on the side of enjoying listening to him explain how he does what he does, and appreciating his dedication to the craft while not really caring about any of the music he was associated with. Like anyone who is full of piss and vinegar, it is at times fun to watch, and other times you shake your head. But I’m very sad to see somebody so young go like that. He contributed to culture.

Wow. Such horrible news. Our industry is always hit pretty hard with passings and most of which are passing way younger than they should.
It is so sad to hear of ones we all respect so dearly and whilst amid their most influential portions of their careers just suddenly passing.
This can be an incredibly stressful industry at times. I sincerely hope that that didn’t play a part in his untimely passing.
To all that knew and loved him, may his memory live on through the imprint he has made through his craft.

Saw the news today and after reflecting on his massive contributions to music, I had to think about his poker chops. I was a big card player back in the day. When he won his second bracelet in one of the 2022 HORSE events, that really made him a cut above. That field was like 800 people if I recall. HORSE is no joke - you gotta be good at all the games.

I always remember Steve when I call a small mom & pop shop and they have a godforsaken answering system. "Answer the fucking phone!" He said: "Answer your goddamn phone or don't have a phone. We have an answering machine at the studio for when everybody's gone, but otherwise I answer the phone and I expect other people to. I detest the whole system of using the phone to manage/frustrate callers with menus and voice mail and all that. It's a copout and it sucks and if you do that to people you're an asshole. Answer your phone.”
I've always wondered how did he answer the phone whilst in the middle of a session.

His analytical, agile, mind and patience were perfect matches for HORSE! I got to hang out with Steve at an event here in town that Rose Marshack set up at ISU. I waited at the end of the line so I could talked to him about the Stud bracelet, this was before the HORSE bracelet. I had watched the Stud final table, and we talked about the limit mindset compared to the no limit mindset. He was not unlike his musical self at the poker table. Pay attention, know what's going on and adjust as necessary. And be steadfast in your belief in the process.

Got a Text today from a friend who worked at Ho Chunk Casino for years ” Who will miss Steve more the casinos or the music Biz” I'm sure the Chicago mixed game guys will feel this loss pretty hard. But so will the DIY musicians.

Still hard to make any sense of the feelings on this tragic loss. Rest in peace.
He certainly bridged the gaps between the fractured divisions of Guitar-bass-drum based music forms.

At least Pytten is still going and Pytten recorded Battles in the North.

What a giant loss for everyone. RIP. I was hoping to work with him as a client one of these days. His articles and videos were always very worthwhile. It was cool that he lived such a principled life and stuck to it.
