I just shot out several different plates. Nothing super technical or thorough - just picking the one I liked the best. My initial test was to compare the IRs in Seventh Heaven and Verbsuite Classics. Then I tried SuperPlate and the UAD EMT 140.
I'm pretty sure the UAD one is from The Plant, so not the same thing...Superplate IDK...anyway - here's how I'd rate them. It's not a "worse" thing, it's just sonic preference without much tweaking. Comparing the Sunset A, B and C Plates, surprisingly (to me at least) I thought the Verbsuite sounded better than Seventh Heaven. Comparing a few presets and some are totally the same (although the decay times are different on most of the stuff which makes no sense). Some - like the Rooms - don't sound like the same preset. But ultimately, I thought the UAD still sounded the best. Which I thought it would be long in the tooth by now. I demoed Number 7 a week or so ago, then forgot about it...so the demo is over. But the same with that one and Seventh Heaven - may presets weren't the same at all. Weird.
1. UAD 140 - it just still sounds the best to me...and being an algorhythm, the tail fades more smoothly and longer than the others.
2. VSC - IMO, this just sounded better than 7th Heaven...bigger, cleaner
3. 7th Heaven - sounded dull in comparison to VSC. I don't know what it is, but it just seems to get lost in the mix. I've had it for forever, and hardly ever go to it. And that's probably why. I just ultimately don't trust it. It's not bad at all, I just never notice it being outstanding. Could be the IR thing.
4. Super Plate - I don't particularly like any of the sounds right out of the box. Don't like the way they're EQ'd. I can tweak and kind of get something I like...but have this and never use it either.

I like the UAD 140 and Liquid Sonics Lustrous Plates.
They are both all I need for plates.

LS Lustrous Plates was the one that made me feel ok about ditching UAD.

Here's what I use most of the time:
Wave Alchemy Radiance (hybrid IR-based with 7 very tasteful chosen plates, built in eq, saturation, modulation, ducking, and transient smoothing)
Arturia PLATE-140 (it was a freebie at one point but works really well on guitars for me)
Fuse Audio Labs VREV-140 (cheap and Ray makes great stuff)
The ST SuperPlate I use sometimes when I'm looking for a very long effect-y verb.

I like Radiance too, nice sounding IR and a lot of options, this is my defaut choice for 140 plate. Generally speaking, I really like the Wave Alchemy reverbs and the price remains reasonable.

Verbsuite with the Bricasti expansion just stunned me. Very hard to discern from the hardware - if you A/B them and if you bump the output by 6 db it is so beautiful. It was a way to get more of that richness for a small investment. I experimented for hours.
Being that I had been using the UAD EMT 140 for 19 years now, I suspect I was just stretched thin with it. Out of favor. It was predictably going to sit well, quickly, sounded good, but it was not a deterrent when I pulled UAD from the system as I haven't been inspired to pull it up much in the past couple years anyway. Right now, SS Verbsuite for the win for me as far as plate verbs.

i am still amazed how good the free soundtoy little plate sounds. i use it on every mix. Yes it’s a great plugin. I got the update to SuperPlate and it’s fabulous. None of them touch a real plate of course but I don’t have room for a real plate so it’s a moot point for me. A sleeper is the UAD EMT 250 (Constant Density Plate) apparently they got the original code from the designer (iirc) and it’s fabulous on snare and acoustic guitar. I use the UAD 250 more than the UAD 140

More thoughts - The Sunset Sound plates didn't do much for me although the Fame Studios one sounds really nice if it happens to fit the source. Not much adjustability and a pretty colored sound. The most convincing plates for me in plugin land are Nebula libraries - Cupwise collection and Tim P's. His 240 gold foil sounds gorgeous and "real". These libraries seem to have the best sense of depth and liveliness to me, but I admit I hardly use them anymore due to CPU load, latency and workflow. I noticed a newer plugin dev who released one too: www.iconic.nyc/sp140Anyome tried it?

I replaced something I started with the UAD140 to the Super Plate last week. I thought it fit the mix better. The UAD sounded to obvious, but the ST sat better.

[quote author=" sentientsound" I noticed a newer plugin dev who released one too: www.iconic.nyc/sp140Anyome tried it?[/quote] I using the sp140 in pro tools with the waves free studio rack as a wrapper for vst3 . Maybe just the honey moon period, but it’s very nice . I have most of the other mfg’s plates and I’m replacing with the sp140 .

Dang it! Stop talking about plates will ya!? 🤢 Sold my pristine EMT140 18 months ago. Miss it like hell but couldn’t justify keeping it after we closed the studio. It’s okay. I’ll get back to my knitting. As you were.
