Man . . . some millennials really piss me off, late to work all the time. Waiting for a drummer who's an hour late to the session, everyone else is just waiting around.
When did common courtesy and respect just fly out the window?

Man . . . some millennials really piss me off, late to work all the time. Waiting for a drummer who's an hour late to the session, everyone else is just waiting around. When did common courtesy and respect just fly out the window? Probably when you started working with musicians / singers? It's not just millennials. I've shared this before, but my "worst case" was far worse than an hour and literally drove me up the wall week after week. But it was how these artists recorded. When I started working for Andrae : - Leave home at 3:30 to show up at studio thru cross town rush hour traffic @ 5:30 to prep for 6:00 session. - Producer shows up at 6:15. We decide which song we are working on. Put on tape and get rough mix up and start waiting. - First session singers show up around 7:00 and immediately leave to go do errands and get food when they see no one is there yet. - More singers dribble in around 7:30-8:00. When they figure out where the other singers went to eat, they leave to go get food too. - Everyone starts to get back and stay around 8:30, the rest of the crew shows up about then. By now, I'm frustrated. - Andrae shows up around 9:00 and all the "hey, sup brah, BSing and joking around starts. Good times. - 9:30 - That's when Andrae STARTS writing the lyrics for the song we are going to record. Knocks it right out and teaches it to the singers who instantly get it. - 9:45-10:00 singers FINALLY go into the studio proper. - 10:15-10:30 we're done TRIPPLE tracking everything (to tape no less). When they work it was like trying to hold on to a raging forest fire. - Home by midnight. For essentially a half hour session. - Singers (5-20 of em) got paid scale by Quincy's label. For FOUR to FIVE hours. LOLOLOL. I've always speculated that it could have been this album that triggered Quincy to shutter his label. Haha! - This happened on and off for weeks. - Wait one year, get Grammy. It was worth it, but frustrating for a guy who does commercial work that happens on the spot. The "sessions" were some of the easiest, and yet most frustrating I've ever done. LOL |

Great story, Bill!! Thanks. Met him when I was 13, after his show. It was rather inspiring.
but I knew from others that he could be a bit of a character!
P.S. The drummer showed up 90 minutes later and knocked 6 songs out of the park in one-two takes each.

Oh yeah, quite the character  - RIP. Well, one thing I've learned over the years is that if you can make the performer comfortable and confident - that makes our jobs infinitely easier. So....if showing up late works for their brain, then so be it. Doesn't relieve any of our frustrations, but again, whatever gets the job done!!! Glad you knocked it out!! |

I'm always shocked when a musician DOES show up on time. I just had a multi Grammy winning artist cancel on me a few days before... because he forgot to check his schedule and double booked.
This is a session with 3-4 people making plans to fly in from all over.

Set session times (I like doing 11-7 myself) then when they show up late, they’re only screwing themselves.
i don’t get a lot of late comers since starting that routine.

I do 10-7, and have for about 7 years. Like you said- At least then they know that if I’m there waiting, it’s just them wasting their money. I also do deposits and if they cancel within a certain amount of days (usually a week, but depends on the artists history with me), I keep 50% and credit 50% towards rescheduling. I have probably 75% or more repeat clients. Clear expectations and boundaries help everyone by eliminating assumptions/confusion. Which means happier clients and happier me. |

Yeah I've rarely had artists show up on time. Just the way it goes I think.
Hell I just had a session and they were living onsite and yet...still late or would push start times all the time.
