I just picked up a brand new R-121 and its exhibiting symptoms I have only heard from a Coles with a ribbon that was on the way out.
Basically, placed the Royer in front of a 4x12 with a moderately loud, but not cranked amp, about 2" back, angled slightly down. 5 mins of use and it was distorting on low transients/making a mechanical clipping or buzzing sound. I had to back it off to about 10" before it wouldn't exhibit this behavior.
I have been using these in the studio on the regular for the past decade with louder amps, up close, and never experienced an issue or anything like this. It passes the shake and flashlight test. Before I go through the ordeal of returning it or shipping it across 3 time zones, has any one else experienced something like this?

Update: Royer agreed something didn't seem right and offered to exchange it. Very nice people and excellent customer service!
